I'm very new to this game.

At the beginning of each game do you always put the characters in the same spaces? Or do you just put four in the light and four in the dark anywhere on the board?

Thanks

Re: Character Placement
You put the characters in the same spaces. Don't worry, things get mixed up pretty quickly.

Re: Character Placement
It is vital that the characters that start out far away are the ones who can most influence the game even from a distance:

Ms. Stealthy can move further
Sgt. Goodley can move other characters
Gull can jump right into play at any time
Watson has the lamp that can work from a distance.

This is not coincidental.

Re: Character Placement
I appreciate you being patient with me, but where in the rules does it show you where to place the characters?

The rules read:

"The character tokens, the covered manhole
tiles, the lit gaslight tiles are set on the board
as shown in picture (1).
Note that as the game starts, four characters
are in shadow and the four others are in the
light – all the character tokens are set with
the suspect side up."

So am I just to mimic the setup in the picture?

Thanks

Yes, place all the pieces exactly as the picture shows.

Re: Character Placement
I've added those little coloured "dot" stickers to the board...colours for where the characters go and numbered yellow stickers for the lamps that start "on".. same wih barracades...just so you don't have to keep refering to the picture.

they really could have added these in actual artwork, I think.

That wouldn't have been a good idea!
You see, once you have the expansion the set-up rules changes:
now you can set any character up in any lit street space of your choice!

Re: Character Placement
And even the setup in the rules is wrong, as noted in the Erratum :)
