Time to review another UK oddity. On the plus side, this in one that is actually obtainable. (A friend of mine in the UK seems to be able to acquire these with ease from the author. Check out http://www.scat.demon.co.uk/)

The Gothic Game is a....scream. The basic game is carved from the Talisman/Dungeonquest mold. Go in the dungeon, stuff happens, some people die.

In this game, the dungeon is a big Gothic Castle, and all players save one die. In fact, the object is to kill all of your opponents. (This is the one mark against the game, players are removed from the game, and forced to sit out.)

Players have 100 "hit points", and when you get to 0 you die. Each room of the castle has a seperate stack of event cards (there are no duplicates, each card is unique.) Some cards can also be used to heal, some to harm opponents, and some just hose you.

There is a lot of the "just hose you" in this game. The moat is poisonous, there is a staircase to hell in the center of the castle, a vampire lives in the crypt who turns anyone who walks in into a killing machine. (Who has a MAJOR problem if he doesn't make it back to the crypt by sunrise. And of course, garlic and wooden stakes are scattered around the game board.) One event card just kills you outright. Most of the weapons to use on other players work this way as well (though you need to move adjacent to the player, and even then there are defense cards against the weapons.)

The cards are VERY amusing and very dark for a game of this sort. A rack causes like 50 points of damage, but makes your legs longer, so you can momve an extra space on your turn for the rest of the game.

Artwork is EC horror comic. Not really cutesy. The event cards are illustrated like woodcuts. (player pawns are basic plastic pawns, one downside.)

The game is of course, nearly completely random. Most of the fun is just seeing what happens, and recording the deaths of folks in the game. (We've started keeping a log, ourselves.)

Re:User Review
Frank Branham (#303),

Unfortunately, the people you referred to as a possible source for the game are apparently no longer accepting requests. Any other ideas where to get this game?
