Game 3 of the Quarter finals

I figured out how to read the stored file when you save the game well enough to capture all the plays so I can give much more detail than my previous reports. Maybe to much detail but I will let you judge.

My opponent Chris and I were tied 1 game each in the Quarter finals of the Wargameroom Twilight Struggle league which is a best of 3 format so this was the deciding game. The game started fairly Normal. I was planning to coup Italy so I took Yugoslavia to get enough influence to take domination of Europe if I won Italy.

Opening Influence:
3 USSR influence added to Poland, now at 3
3 USSR influence added to Yugoslavia, now at 3

4 USA influence added to West Germany, now at 4
3 USA influence added to Italy, now at 3

Early War
Turn 1 Defcon 5, VP 0.
Headline Phase, Soviet Headline Card Socialist Governments and American Headline Card CIA Created. I reduced American influence in Italy by 2, now at 1 and West Germany by 1, now at 3 with the socialist. Chris added 1 influence to Italy, bring it to 2.

Round 1 I played Warsaw Pact Formed for ops and couped Iran. The coup succeeds and I got 1 influence in Iran. Was going to coup Italy but with the extra influence from the CIA I changed my plans, darn the CIA. Chris countered by planning Nuclear Test Ban to coup Iran, gaining 5 influence in Iran.

Round 2 I played the China card for 4 influence in South Korea and 1 influence in Afghanistan.
Chris played Korea War. USSR won, VP at -2 and my influence in South Korea is now 5. He added 2 influence to Pakistan.

Round 3 I played Vietnam Revolts for the event, eyeing Thailand. Chris played Arab-Israeli War adding 2 influence to Jordan. He rolled a 4 so the event had no effect. It would have if he had not added influence to Jordan.

Round 4 I played Marshall Plan for influence. 1 to West Germany, 1 to Syria, 2 to Iraq. With the event Chris added influence to United Kingdom, West Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Greece. The US played Indo-Pakistani War for influence adding 1 to West Germany and 1 to Indonesia. Europe was solidly blue.

Round 5 I played Truman Doctrine, removing my 1 influence in Finland and added 2 to Thailand with the help of the Vietnam event. US played Fidel, giving me 3 influence in Cuba and added 2 to Malaysia.

Round 6 I had to play Asia scoring
USSR: 3(presence) +3(battlegrounds) = 6
USA: 3(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 4
VPs down 2, now at -4

US played Europe Scoring
USSR: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5
USA: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5

Turn 2, Defcon raised to 4. VP -4.
Soviet’s Headline Card is Captured Nazi Scientists. American’s Headline Card is Formosan Resolution. USSR progress on the Space Race Track is now at Earth Satellite, VPs down 2, now at -6.

Round 1 I played Duck and Cover. VP now at -4. I Coup Panama. Reducing the US influence by 1 to zero. Chris played NATO adding 1 influence to Lebanon and 3 to Israel (total 4).

Round 2 I played Comecon, suspecting Middle East scoring I added 3 influence to Saudi Arabia. Chris played Middle East Scoring.
USSR: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5
USA: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5

Round 3 I space raced East European Unrest. USSR progress on the Space Race Track is now at Animal in Space. Chris space raced Decolonization progressing to Earth Satellite, VP at -3.

Round 4 I played Olympic Games for influence, 1 in Thailand and 1 in Loas. Chris played De Gaulle Leads France giving me 1 influence in France. Chris added 3 influence in France.

Round 5 I played Five Year Plan, discarding Romanian Abdication. I played 3 influence in France, total of 4. Chris played US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact adding 4 influence into France and taking control. My hopes for Europe were crushed.

Round 6 I played Blockade as an event hoping he had depleted his big cards with the last play. He had not, he discarded De-Stalinization. He then played Suez Crisis for op points. I removed 2 from France and 2 from Israel. He added 2 to France and 1 to Italy. Guess he thought I was eyeing Europe, which I was. Americans were 2 ops short so the VP went to -5.

Turn 3, Defcon 3, VP -5

In the headline phase I clicked on the card play window by mistake and didn't know what card I had played. I had played Five Year Plan and Chris had played Defectors canceling it. Not terrible for what could have been a huge mistake. It may have made me look scare good that the one round he played defector I played a US event but I was just very lucky.

Round 1 I played US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact and UN intervention to prevent it's effect. There was no where good to coup as he had 5 influence in Iran, but there also was no where good for him to coup so I played for ops points. 3 in Israel and 1 in Burma. Chris played Nuclear Test Ban adding 3 influence in India and 1 in Egypt.

Round 2 I played Comecon to coup Egypt. I rolled a 6 so I had 4 influence in Egypt. Chris played Nasser, so I had 6 influence in Egypt, and added 1 influence to Israel.

Round 3 I played Middle East Scoring.
USSR: 5(domination) +3(battlegrounds) = 8
USA: 3(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 4
VPs down 4, now at -9.
Chris space raced Socialist Governments getting Animals into space.

Round 4 I played Independent Reds giving the US 3 influence in Yugoslavia. In Asia I was leading in battleground countries with 3 to his 2 but we were tied in total countries so I did not have domination.
I added 1 influence to Burma to take control of it and 1 influence to Taiwan as Formosa was in effect and I didn't want him to get his 3rd battle ground before Asia scoring which was in my hand. Chris fell for my faint and played East European Unrest to Taiwan, leaving Asia in my control.

Round 5 I played Asia Scoring.
USSR: 7(domination) +3(battlegrounds) = 10
USA: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5
VPs down 5, now at -14.
Chris played Indo-Pakistani War, Rolling a 6 and successful invading Pakistan, which he already controlled. VP up 2 to -12 and he got the military ops he needed.

Round 6 I played Containment adding 2 influence to Algeria and 1 to Libya. Chris played Warsaw Pact Formed. I reinforced East Germany and Poland and try to reassert my control of Yugoslavia after the independent reds had tied our influence in that region. He added 2 to South Africa, 1 to Philippines and 1 to Spain.

Midwar

Turn 4 Defcon 3, VP -12
Headlines was the old Brezhnev Doctrine/Purge combination, cancelling each other out.

Round 1 the US formed the Alliance for Progress but with no influence in the Americas got 0 vp. I couped Iran reducing US influence from 5 to 2. Coup targets were limited as the only influence in Africa was South Africa. The US played Junta to gain infuence in Chile and realign Castro out of Cuba. Amazing how easy that is in the game and how hard it seems to be in real life.

Round 2 I played Africa Scoring.
USSR: 1(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 2
USA: 1(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 2
Chris space raced Quagmire for no effect, rolling a 5.

Round 3 I space raced Voice of America to launch a Lunar Probe, vp at -14. Chris played Romanian Abdication to add one influence to Argentina and give me Romania. This gave me new hope I could bring Europe to a tie as I was holding Europe Score card and didn't have much else to do with no way into the Americas or Africa.

Round 4 I played One Small Step to add 2 influence to Greece. Chris played Latin American Death Squads to add 1 to Turkey and 1 to Greece.

Round 5 I played Missile Envy to add 2 to Greece taking control. Chris played John Paul II Elected Pope as an event canceling my hopes to bring Europe to a tie.

Round 6 I played Ask Not. US discarded Southeast Asia Scoring and South African Unrest. I added 1 influence to Poland and in desperation 1 to France. Chris played Summit to add 1 to France.

Round 7 I had to play Europe Scoring
USSR: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5
USA: 7(domination) +3(battlegrounds) = 10
VPs up 5, now at -9.
Chris played Arms Race to add 1 to Chile and 2 to Argentina taking them both to 3 influence. US was 2 ops short, VP at -11.

Turn 5, Defcon 3. VP -11.

Turn 5 headlines were Allende and Sadat.

Round 1 I invoked a Cultural Revolution to coup Europe (Cast of your Head Scarf?) I rolled a 3 so now had 1 influence in Egypt. Chris played NATO to add 2 to Chile and 2 to Mexico.

Round 2 I played Portuguese Empire Crumbles to add 1 to both Egypt and Libya taking control of both. Chris played ABM Treaty to coup Egypt but rolled a 1 leaving me with 1 influence in Egypt.

Round 3 I played How I Learned to Stop Worrying to add 2 influence to Egypt. Chris sent We Will Bury You into space for no effect.

Round 4 I space raced Duck and Cover to get a Man into Space giving me the all import peek at US headlines. Chris played Nuclear Subs to add 2 influence into Israel, always good to see that go into the discard.

Round 5 I staged a Brush War in Argentina. I rolled a 6 so I know had 3 influence in Argentina and VP was at -12. Chris played SALT Negotiations to add 2 to Peru and 1 to Israel.

Round 6 I played the U-2 Incident to add 3 influence to Denmark trying to level up Europe.
Chris played Arab-Israeli War to add 1 influence to Israel and Taiwan getting control of both. The event was an automatic failure as he had a -3 modifier for Israel, Jordan and Lebanon.

Round 7 I played Camp David Accords adding 1 to Yugoslavia for control which remove US' European domination and 1 to the Gulf States to guard against the US taking it to tie us in Middle East countries. Chris played Shuttle Diplomacy for the event.

Turn 6, Defcon 3. VP -12.
For headlinesthe US played Ussuri River Skirmish which I could see thanks to my man in space. I played Cuban Missile Crisis as it would lower the defcon and allow me to react to the Skirmish without being couped plus it was more dangerous to me as I had no influence in Cuba. The US added influence in Thailand and North Korea.

Round 1 I played Flower Power to take back Thailand and North Korea. Chris played Puppet Governments to gain a foothold in Panama, Venezuela and Brazil.

Round 2 I played Liberation Theology to get 2 influence in Panama and 1 in Cuba. Chris played Central America Scoring before I could get a presence but giving up the struggle for Panama.
USSR: No score.
USA: 1(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 2
VPs up 2, now at -9

Round 3 I played Kitchen Debates which had no effect and added 1 influence into Panama. The USSR had 12 countries to the US' 10. Chris played The China Card to add 1 to Brazil and Venezuela and 2 to Uruguay.

In round 4 I saw a South America scoring coming but missed his influence in Uruguay so I played Muslim Revolution to coup Peru. I rolled a 3 and gained 1 influence in Peru. Chris played South America Scoring.
USSR: 2(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 3
USA: 5(domination) +3(battlegrounds) = 8
VPs up 5, now at -4

Round 5 I played Willy Brandt as an event, VP -5. Chris played De-Stalinization adding 1 influence to West Germany and 2 to Angola. I removed 1 from South Korea and 3 from Israel adding 1 to Peru, Zaire, Nigeria and Panama.

Round 6 I played Panama Canal Returned realigning Chile and reducing US influence by 2. The event added 1 US influence to Panama, Costa Rica and Venezuela. Chris Space Raced OPEC, launching his Lunar Probe.

Round 7 Nixon Played the China Card which I used to realign Chile removing all influence from Chile. US played Colonial Rearguards to add 1 influence to Algeria, Nigeria, Zaire and South Africa.

The Americans are 2 military operations short, VP -7.

Turn 7, Defcon 3. VP -7.

[Click image to see more detail]

Headlines were Southeast Asia Scoring for the US and Missile envy for USSR.
Missile envy resolved first. US discarded Nuclear Test Ban. Defcon now 5 and VP down 1 to -8.
*** Scoring in Southeast Asia ***
USSR: 1(Burma) +1(Laos/Cambodia) +2(Thailand) +1(Vietnam) = 5
USA: 1(Philippines) +1(Malaysia) +1(Indonesia) = 3
VPs down 2, now at -10

Round 1 I played Duck and Cover, DEFCON lowered to 4, VPs up 1, now at -9. I countered the rearguard adding 1 influence to Algeria, Nigeria and Zaire. The US was forced to play Missile Envy adding 1 to Cameroon and Zimbabwe and leaving my position in Africa tenuous.

Round 2 I played Grain Sales to Soviets with UN Intervention. I tried a realignment in Cameroon. I was at +1 but failed both times. Chris played Central America Scoring
USSR: 1(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 2
USA: 1(presence) +1(battlegrounds) = 2

Round 3 I played Europe Scoring.
USSR: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5
USA: 3(presence) +3(battlegrounds) = 6
VPs up 1, now at -8
Chris played lone gunman and I looked at his hand, nothing horrible, so I added 1 influence to Chile. Chris couped Nigeria, rolling a 5, he now had 3 influence in Nigeria and I had none.

Round 4 with the defcon at 3 and my position in Africa slipping I had to coup. I played 1 small step to counter-coup Nigeria, rolling a 5. I now had 2 influence in Nigeria. Chris played Olympic Games to to realign Zaire and Cuba, wiping me out of both, Puh!

Round 5 I space raced Bear Trap for no effect. Chris space raced Decolonization to get his own man into space, no more headline previews for me.

Round 6 I played OAS Founded and US took 2 influence in Argentina. I added 1 to Argentina for a total of 4. Chris played Indo-Pakistani War and India failed to invade Pakistan even thought I had no influence in either but he got 2 more military ops for a total of 3.

Round 7 I played ABM Treaty adding 2 to Chile taking control of it and 2 to Gulf States which gave me back domination even under Shuttle Diplomacy. Chris played South African Unrest and I added 1 to South Africa and 2 to Botswana. The US added 1 influence to Argentina making it 3 to 4 in my favor but taking away my control.

Late War

Turn 8 Defcon 3, VP -8.
The soviet headline was Socialist Governments and the american Headline Nuclear Subs. The dreaded sub round, but I try to pin him in Europe and reduce it's impact. Reduced influence in France by 2 and West Germany by 1.

Round 1 Soviets Shoot Down KAL-007 which lowers the defcon to 2. VPs goes up 2, now at -6. Then I add 4 influence to France to take control of France. The US embraces Flower Power to regain West Germany and take Argentina.

Round 2 I stage a Brush War in Argentina hoping to retake it but to no effect. Chris plays Terrorism and I discard The Iron Lady, Margret Thatcher goes down in flames.

Round 3 I am holding SALT Negotiations and the Terrorism decides that I want to play it. I grab Brush War with the card. Chris plays Latin American Death Squads to coup Egypt. He rolls a 5 but with the SALT and an extra influence I still have 1 influence in Egypt.

Round 4 I play Glasnost to add 3 to Egypt and 1 to Libya, Coup that Chris! He played Star Wars to add 1 to Saudi Arabia.

Round 5 I play summit to retake Saudi Arabia. Chris plays Reagan Bombs Libya to add 1 to Saudi Arabia.

Round 6 I play Colonial Rearguards. The US adds 1 influence to Algeria, Angola, Burma and Laos. I add 1 influence to Saudi Arabia and Algeria. US plays Portuguese Empire Crumbles giving me 2 influence in SE African States and Angola. Chris then adds 1 influence to Saudi Arabia, enough already.

Round 7 I play Brush War to add 1 to Saudi Arabia, Laos and Burma. Chris plays Middle East Scoring.
(-1 to Russian battleground total due to Shuttle Diplomacy)
USSR: 5(domination) +3(battlegrounds) = 8
USA: 3(presence) +2(battlegrounds) = 5
VPs down 3, now at -9.

The Americans are 2 military operations short of the DEFCON requirement of 4.
The Soviets are 1 military operation short of the DEFCON requirement of 4.
VPs down 1, now at -10

Turn 9, Defcon 5, VP -10.

Turn 9 Headlines I play Quagmire and the American play Purge. The Purge could be bad but I am holding War Games. Can I get the defcon down in time to win?

Round 1 I play Comecon to coup Angola. Rolling a 6 so I have 5 influence in Angola. US discards the Reformer to end the Quagmire.

Round 2 I play Ortega Elected in Nicaragua to coup Zaire and roll another 6 giving me 4 influence in Zaire. Chris counter-coups Zaire with Arab-Israeli War. He rolls a 4 removing all my influence in the country but more importantly setting the Defcon to 2.

Round 3 I play Wargames, VP up 6 to -4. USSR wins.

Yes, I may have needed to change my shorts at the end of the turn.

Once you click there is no way to see what the card was and I had to wait maybe 30 seconds while Chris was deciding what card to play wondering what card it was while trying to concentrate on the cards still in my hand and the best way to play them. I love the tension in this game even when it is self-endued.
