I'm from South Jersey. new york city is 3 hours away so anything more North than that is out of the question. Philly is my closest big city but I'm not that far from Baltimore area either.

Hi,

There are a number of board gaming options around the Philly area. Some that I'm aware of:

- Roundtable Games in Conshohocken has a lot of miniatures and CCG play on a regular basis. They also have regular Wednesday evening board gaming. Check it out: http://www.roundtable-games.com/

- Penn Gamers meets every Wednesday evening on Penn's campus in University City (downtown/West Philly) for lots of board game action. Info here: http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~pgamers/

- The Eastern PA Gaming Society meets in several location outside Philadelphia... twice a month? All day on Saturday, rotating between different malls. Announcements are periodically made in these forums. More info: http://www.epgs.org/

- Last but certainly not least is the Philadelphia Area Gaming Enthusiasts club. It meets every Sunday night in Center City, every Tuesday evening in Glenside (northwest Philly). There are several regularly scheduled events, including boardgames on the 1st and 3rd week, as well as pick up boardgaming on other weeks. Details here: http://pagegaming.com/

If you search around on here, John Desmond from Penn Gamers also regularly posts a huge, exhaustive list of local shops and clubs on here and in a few other forums. Worth looking up & checking out.

Feel free to message me if you have more specific questions.

I believe the original poster was asking about conventions. Your best choices are the World Boardgaming Championships in Lancaster in July or August (details at http://www.boardgamers.org/) as well as Historicon (http://www.historicon.org/), which is at the same place and generally the week or two beforehand.

In spite of its name, the World Boardgaming Championships has a LOT of casual gaming, mostly in the true "boardgame" ilk. Historicon is historic miniatures, along with all the regalia that generally goes along with that hobby (worth the trip even if you don't play, but plenty of friendly folks that will invite you to their table).

The Winter Offensive is happening near Annapolis Maryland in two weeks -- January 17th-20th (http://www.multimanpublishing.com/wo.php) This is Avalon Hill style games, keying on ASL, and raises money for ALS. A bit longer drive.

Ah, yes, I missed what forum we were in.

Two other nearby cons include UberCon (Edison, NJ), and PhilCon (Center City Phila). I believe both are in November. PhilCon is really a general scifi/fantasy convention as opposed to a gaming convention, but there's a lot of sessions on gaming & a pretty healthy gaming program/area complete w/ a good sized boardgame library, pickup games, and a schedule of organized games.

Re: Philly?
Double Exposure (already mentioned) runs two excellent cons per year in central New Jersey (just over 1 hour from Philly).

All of the info on their Cons can be found at:

www.dexposure.com

1. Dreamation is a 4-day Con, and it runs each January. It is in 2 weeks, January 24-27, 2008.

2. DexCon is a 5-day Con, and it runs each July. This year it is scheduled for July 16-20, 2008.

Double Exposure used to run FOUR Cons a year, but they have scaled back. They are the best run Cons in NJ, bar none, running many gaming tracks (Boardgames, CCGs, RPGs, Minatures, Anime Room, Computer Gaming, etc.).

UberCon is also an excellent (albeit smaller) con. They (usually) run two Cons per year in central New Jersey. You can get more information on their events at:

www.ubercon.com

I attend all of the Double Exposure game cons, as well as the UberCons. They are all very worthwhile.

Best,
Stephen, "The Evil One"

Salutations, gentlefolk,

Unfortunately, Real Life has been taking up most of my energy lately. Haven't had chance to update the game club list recently. Old version is at http://boardgamegeek.com/article/1000669. New edition coming Real Soon Now. Additions, corrections, etc, are very welcome

BTW, you might want to checkout the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society cons in Lancaster in March and July - www.hmgs.org

Yours, John Desmond

Thanks everyone, I may try to check out a bunch of these.

Without a doubt i'm going to hit the Dreamation In two weeks for a day. It's only 1:15 min drive. That's only 30 min longer than it takes to get to my nearest game shop. Maybe I'll see ya there Evil One.

The Uber one still has its' website up from November. Lancaster's about a 3 hour trek but i was looking at the WBGC website.

Games Club of Maryland (http://gamesclubofmd.org) has 2 major conventions each year in Timonium, MD. Plus gaming every day of the weekend somewhere in the metro Baltimore area. I highly recommend you check them out.

Salutations, again, gentlefolk,

Should mention that _my_ street address in the Games Club list has changed.

Should you wish to send me anything via the US Mail, UPS, FedEx, etc - it now goes to:
345 East Essex Ave
Lansdowne, Pa, 19050

BTW, we hope to be having the next Lansdowne Games Day sometime around the end of winter. Watch the Geek for details.

Hope y'all have a Happy New Year !

Yours, John Desmond

Pete and Joe mentioned Game Clubs of Maryland but I also wanted to put in a plug for GCOM's Trashfest 2008, May 1-4 in Timonium, Maryland.(2 hour drive from South Jersey and Philadelphia. Yes, the same people who put on Euroquest in the Fall are putting on Trashfest this spring. At this fest games like Heroscape, Descent, Arkham Horror and Star Craft will played so hopefully you can make it.
