Tony sets his defense to hold the university along the north shore of the lake. A Guards rifle squad and elite team(.50 cal MG) setup along east edge of the university buildings. They are supported by Guards SMG squad(satchel charge) and Sgt Bikovets in the building immediately behind the .50 cal MG. A Guards Rifle with LMG sets up across
the road from Bikovets.
Lt Khukovsky, a Guards SMG, and LMG are assigned to a building north of the university.
An elite team is positioned south of the lake.
Ross takes Germans and assigns Esser, pioneer squad with flamethrower, and rifle
squad to the north. Biermann and pioneer squad (satchel charge) set up in house
across road from Esser.
A rifle squad and LMG and another rifle squad(LMG) set up between the main roads
in the center near objective 2.
Lt Schrader and rifle squad(HMG) setup in objective 4.

Esser and pioneer squad(Flamethrower) move around Russians and down road. Russians
are unable to slow the breakout. Esser’s second squad breaks off and moves into
building with Biermann. German HMG opens up on Russian .50 cal MG but the Russian’s building cover protects them.
Bikovets and his men withdraw deeper into the university buildings to get out of line of site of the German HMG.
Russians and Germans exchange fire in center. Only result is a broken
Russian LMG which subsequently is eliminated.
Russian Elite Team moves off the German side of map. German MG fire ineffective
in attempting to stop them.[Russian VP +2]

as a Russian squad moves to block them. Esser's men notice foxholes ahead.
This hesitation allows Russians to rotate their .50 cal MG around and
put heavy fire down on Esser’s position. Along with fire from the
accompanying squad, the Germans are eliminated. [Russian VP 5]
A blaze breaks out on a road adjacent to objective 4.
Russians feel the change in momentum and with an attempt at a knock
out blow, Advance Khukovsky and squad into hand to hand combat against
a German squad to the north. However, the Germans having expected Russian
move, ambush the enemy. With great determination, the Germans emerge victorious.
[German VP 5]
With the northern roads now clear of Russians, Biermann and
squad(satchel charge) move along roads into Russian rear areas
and take objective 3.
Russian Guards SMG moves toward Biermann's position. Germans fire on the
squad as they move into a nearby building with no effect. A breeze
spreads the blaze down the road to the east. Biermann calls in air support

Sudden death at time 8 Objective points: Russian VP 4
End game. Russians win with VP 3.
A hard fought battle!
This was Ross' 3rd battle in CCE. I gave him minimal suggestions as game went on.
As Russians, the game was relatively even for the first 3 turns and then I saw the game quickly getting out of control as Ross moved his men down the road along the south end of the lake and I had no fire cards. With the double exit points, and having already had these men exit off the northern side of the battlefield once, I saw my tenuous lead in VP slipping away. Lucky for me, he could not continue his move the next turn and I received a fire card. With great rolls, I was able to eliminate his men. I thought I had the game in the bag. However, seeing a chance at delivering a knock out blow was too much for me to ignore. It was nearly catastrophic! Losing Khukovsky in the melee left the northern edge of the town wide open for the Germans. Both of the last 2 time triggers were fought over vigorously with initiative card with me trying to get the game to end and Ross trying to get the game to continue.
1 more turn, and I may have succumbed.

Excellent battle report !
You have probably noted that the six points Russians received from events were the margin of victory.
Hope your newish player becomes addicted.
I think he has. He said the night before we played, he was thinking about our last battle of a week before!!!
Great report Tony! Exactly the stuff we are looking for in reports for the Scenario of the Month Project.
I hope to be able to do this for everyone scenario of the month.
IMHO, the German player made a mistake when he sent Esser through the southern road without any Smoke Grenades cover and exposed himself to the .50 cal MG firepower. Way too risky.
Would he have been a little bit more patient, he would have scored 10 VPs more and very likely eliminated the lonely Soviet squad on Esser's way.
