This is a list of games using the intro-game equation I invented (raw rating*BGG-averaged rating/weight). I place it here just to spur conversation. This is not the in any way an endorsement of these games as the ultimate "gateway" games, just games that have a high degree of quality and are easy to get other non-gamers involved with. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that the top 9 are basically dexterity games. And, many of the top 100 are dexterity and/or kids' games. I know that this list was generated using a mathematical calculation from user input and I find it very interesting that several of the games that I consider good gateways are right near the top. Good stuff... thanks for sharing!

Games from the top 30 of the list that I own and like as "gateways":
10. No Thanks!
13. Diamant
15. For Sale
17. Can't Stop
22. Category 5
25. Wits & Wagers
27. Coloretto

I'm not sure I'd consider those games "gateway" games. I would consider them a great selection of lighter games. But I don't think that selection of games is going to gateway someone into games like Puerto Rico, 1960, or Paths of Glory, or even Settlers of Catan for that matter.

I consider them fodder for the "I'll just watch" person who could maybe then be talked into a slightly deeper game once they've played something else and had a good time.

Good point about the "gateway" term. I guess these are more like "starter" games. I think the games that I put in my short list give people a chance to play something light that is often a bit different than games they are used to playing. And, I can say that Incan Gold (or Diamant) started my brother into his gaming free-fall (or whatever term you want to use ).

Four of us were playing Incan Gold at my parents one night when he stopped in. We got him to join the game despite his reservations and he made us play a few more times than we were planning. There were several games in-between, but now he is a proud owner of Puerto Rico and Ra and he is looking to play PR whenever he has the chance. So, although he played Ticket to Ride in there which may have been his "gateway" to a more serious one like Puerto Rico, Incan Gold started it.

Interesting. There are one or two that open up a route to other things, including Coloretto (to Zooloretto) and Villa Paletti (to SdJ games).

This extract is worth a look.

Anyone have a view on how well this ranks their accessibility to the newer gamer? I would venture that the order isn't at all bad.

How about ranking games by taking ratings only from users who've rated 10 games or less. Or 5 games or less. Etc. Theoretically, these could be the new gamers and the games they like. On the other hand, I think you'd get highly ranked Chess and Monopoly from users who come here once, rate their favorite game, and never come back.

Where does this gateway lead and what type of people are going through it? Toys-R-Us and Wal-Mart have already been the gateway for most people for dexterity games, children's games, and card games.

I agree with Michael that this list should be viewed as great suggestions for light games.

Thanks for the computations. One thing I'd add is that game weight isn't the only characteristic for accessibility, but superficial things like a game's name, its box art and such are part of it - and that it's in English. I couldn't get my family to play a game with a foreign title, no matter how light it is.
