A Saturday Night Dungeon Quest

Expansions: Heroes and Catacombs
The Players: Kevin, Mark, Zach

Kevin played the Ironhand the Mighty, a meatwall of a gladiator (no abilities, no ring, just a lot of Life Points), Mark played Tori-Jima the Ninja, and Zach played Thargrim the Dark Lord.

Ironhand was bitten by a vampire early on - that's one life point of damage per turn. Terrible to get bitten at the beginning of the game - effectively he had 19 turns (his LP) instead of 26 (the sun). So, after traveling towards the lair for a while - life force ever weakening - the once-mighty gladiator knew he could not postpone his retreat any longer. He was one turn away from escaping the dungeon, and getting his bite patched up by his companions outside, when he fell into a trapdoor and was stuck. The unfortunate warrior clawed at the pit's wall as he gasped his last. It is said he now wanders the dungeon eternally, thirsty for blood, but never quite satiated because he's so damn big.

Tori-Jima the Ninja used the ring of Transformation early on to replace a deadend room where a portcullis sealed him in (strength is needed to lift; Ninja has low strength). "Agility roll" was the phrase of the day for Tori-Jima - lucky for him he has an extremely high agility score. He needed to escape a vampire (strangely common in this particular dungeon) as well as two trap doors, and possibly another danger or two. Except for one Luck roll, no other stat was required. Two monsters passed by but could not see the ninja in the shadows. An orc who did happen to notice Tori-Jima fled as a shuriken was about to strike his face. After finding some trinkets and loose change scattered about, the Ninja knew he could not quite make it to the lair - the rooms just wouldn't lead there and there was no secret passage to be found. Total GP was about 200-300. Not bad. Glory would be his, provided none of the other dungeon delvers fared better....

Thargrim the Dark Lord boldly stepped into the dungeon, lusting for battle. Even a Chaos Warrior needs a little help sometimes, so he took the Ring of Blinding, just in case. The rooms in Thargrim's corner of the dungeon were full of twisty passages, all alike, and he had some navigational difficulties on the way to the dragon's lair. Eventually he made it and burgled four treasures - a total of over 6000 GP - without awaking the dragon. There would be no blood for the Chaos gods tonight, as the monsters were nowhere to be found. Refusing to believe he was merely "lucky", Thargrim rationalized that even the denizens of this deadly dungeon feared his presence. The warrior linked up with Ironhand's corner of the dungeon and waltzed out completely unscathed, humming a shanty about splitting dwarf skulls. Thargrim strolled over to the local pawn shop, tossed the valuable treasures on the counter, and - in between yawns - asked what all the fuss was about.

Winner: Zach

Ha ha… simply great.

But… Vampire? You mean the English version feature Vampires instead of the "Sting Crawlers"?

Nice. Would want me to further look into any differences.

Well I'm not really sure because I've never played the Swedish version. How the vampire works: Roll equal to or less than your armor or agility - whichever is better - and if you fail you take 1 damage each turn.

Yep. That's the dreaded Sting Crawler. Here it looks like a fat, evil worm of Doom. Comes only in the expansion (which in the English version was split into two expansions).

The next "on noes" thig in the expansion was the centipede you could find when you Searched a room. It made d12 damage - as dangerous as the dragon! Now that one is a laugh.

That centipede comes with the basic English set. I remember reading about a house rule that changes it to (D12 - armor).
