We started a three-player game last night (our first play), and we found the encounters a bit too easy. We breezed through the first several before we found one that challenged us in the least. After 8 encounters, two players are down to 75 and 65 hits points, and the third has yet to take a point of damage. Two of the players have jockeyed for the position of dealing the killing blow, and only a couple of points separates them in their prestige scores.

I was expecting the encounters to present more of a challenge. Since the game suggests that teamwork is essential, we didn't do a lot of messing with one another in the early going outside of thwarting attacks that otherwise would have dealt killing blows. Few of the creatures we've battled, however, last more than a round or two. The wolfpack so far was the most interesting encounter, lasting three or four rounds.

Are we playing this too straight and not backstabbing one another enough? Besides the obvious of scaling the number of players up a notch (4 for a 3-player game instead of the standard), what else ought we be doing to make these encounters more interesting and more challenging?

Sounds like it, we are almost always at each other as soon as we start! It makes for a fun game with lots of backstabbing!!

In our second game, we ruthlessly tripped, stabbed and grabbed and did everything we could to thwart other players. The encounters lasted longer and two players were near death before it was all over. Loose the dogs of betrayal!

Yeah I've found that with a group of new players the first game or two is very polite and a bit too easy, but it's a good base to build on for the later treachery and backstabbing. Once all players are well versed in what cards to keep and when to play them you find that the game gets more intense, bloody, and edge of your seat.
