Hey hey,

Anyone 'in the know' out there?

I saw mention of an SK4 on the horizon... has anyone heard any whisperings of what it may contain?

I've just started playing my way through this one so i have a LONG way ahead of me, but i thought i would throw out the question...

Do any experienced ASL players have any ideas about what would be the logical next step?

[i do realise that rather than buying a never ending supply of SK's it would be a better idea to get the full thing - but i like the nice easy bite sized method]

A scenario 'kit' with a few specialist tokens, maps and instructions plus a big stack 'o' scenarios would be cool...

anyways...

Malcolm,

I haven't heard anything. What have you heard?

With respect to future starter kits, I have only read things by ASL players in terms of wish-list-speak. Last I heard, the official line is that SK#3 ends the series and beyond that one is supposed to go into full ASL. And, the starter kits will be supported with articles and scenarios via MMP's other vehicles such as Operations magazine.

That said, MMP is a business and if consumers like this form factor I would be surprised if more "Starter Kit" products were not forthcoming. Some of the wishing going on includes historical starter kit modules like those published for ASL.

You would probably be much better off posting this question at ConsimWorld. Navigate to:

ConsimWorld Forum -- Boardgaming -- Individual Game or Series Discussion -- Era: World War II (GAME SERIES) -- Advanced Squad Leader series (MMP) -- Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit - ASLSK (MMP)

You could try checking on www.cardboardwarriors.com from time to time, as they seem to collate news on all official and third-party ASL products.

MMP has said that there will be no more starter kits. However, there has been mention on ConsimWorld and on the Gamesquad ASLSK forum that Ken Dunn, ASLSK developer for MMP, is working on a historical module for ASLSK that will cover some actions during the Market-Garden offensive. No word on what will be included.

If you want some more scenarios, there is the "Rally Point 2" pack of scenarios from the Tampa ASL group. They are playable as ASLSK and as ASL scenarios. I've played 3 of them and enjoyed them. Most require that you have all the SK games - as they have tanks.

I've recieved correspondance that led me to the impression that MMP was, indeed, doing another SK related product. I think it is just scenarios.

I wish they'd make a 'transition' module that connected the SKs with the full ASL game system, but that's not happening.

Just thought I would throw a few centavos out there on the next ASLSK product for those that might be interested.

1. ASLSK Action Pack. I am currently in both design and playtest of a 3 map action pack. The maps could be characterized as 1. A cross road style small village/farmstead with wooded hills Map 2. A good sized Italian/Sicilian town and Map 3. a tight town in NW Europe fading into woods/orchards/open ground

I am planning on 8 scenarios by as many different authors as I can find using these boards only. There are several good sceanrios and I expect a few more as not everyone has sent them in yet. The mix of actions includes Poles vs. Slovaks, Germans vs. Russians in Lapland, American Rangers vs. plucky Italian Coastal Defense units, Free French vs. Germans, among others. There is something for everyone in this package. I hope also to make sure that errata is issued for anything that might need it from ASLSK 3.

2. ASLSK Scenarios for Operations magazine. "Out of Luck" was just released in Operations #51, Russian vs. German Tanks in late war Heavy Metal! There are two more designs that are done just off the rigorous testing environment of the WBC ASLSK tournament!

3. ASLHSK (This probably needs a better acronym!) Still messing with this and it is early in the process. Should be pretty cool assuming MMP can pull it off!

Hope these items perk your interest.

Ken

And a follow-up, from 24 Jan 2008:

Ken Dunn wrote:
Several of the sceanrios in the proposed Action Pack were playtested at MMP's Winter Offensive last week. I would say that one of the sceanrios is fully playtested and that two others were moved much closer. There are 4 other scenarios which have received a little bit of playtesting to none at all.

I also gave Pete Shelling the maps, which at this point are simply hand drawn, for him to design one more scenario for the Pack.

Hey,

Many thanks for all the replies.

an 'historical' pack using the tokens from kits 1 - 3 sounds EXACTLY like the kind of thing i was hoping for!

it sounds like it's going to happen so i just hope the SK2 reprint arrives soon so i can carry on with this thing.

thanks,

malcolm

I'm not sure where to get them in the UK. Sherry Enterprises is the publisher. In the US, they are available from The Gamer's Armory.

I doubt there will be n "SK4"...by the time you've mastered SK#3 you're pretty much there.

If you do feel like you need yet another baby-step before full immersion, try digging up an OOP copy of Paratrooper...it was sort of the original SK...meant to ease Squad Leader players into the new system.

On the other hand, if what you're looking for is just more gaming goodness at the SK level, try Operations magazine...some great SK scenarios in there.
