is the answer to life, the universe and everything. But what is the question?

The question is: What is a shit-load?

it is a corruption of "ship load", just as "butt load" is a corruption of "boat load".

Huh? I worked on a ranch/farm in the summers of my youth. Long before I ever even saw a ship and I knew exactly what a shitload was... it was a load of shit, usually in a wheelbarrow. And usually shoveled there by me... which is how I assume we ended up with the "quit shoveling your shit" phrase and it's variants.

"That ol' DW, he sure knows how to shovel the shit."

Buttload is more recent and I first began hearing it in the 80's from gamers in my store. I thought about it and assumed it was referencing the tendency Americans and Europeans have had since McDonald's appeared to grow large, unavoidable butts and cram them into fuscia colored leggings.

"Phew! Boy Howdy! That chick sure has a buttload of butt jammed into those leggings."

How much is a metric assload, though? And how does it differ from an English/imperial assload?

I think it depends on how much you ate earlier in the day.

10 lbs of prunes is never a good idea at any time.

Correct, which says something rather disconcerting about our current understanding of the universe...

You know those Limies, to them, a shitload is 42,000 because they multiply all the important units of measure by an order of magnitude.
