I have played the base set a few times, and own but have not used Call to Arms. My opponent and I are looking to try out CtA next time. (He likes complicated games; I'm a miniatures gamer, so the build-your-own-army thing appeals to me.) There are also the expansions that add new troop types. But do those new types work with the deployment cards for CtA? Can you just sub green pikemen in for green infantry or something? With dwarf cavalry especially it seems like they wouldn't fit in.

Short answer - YES. (the new troops will work with the deployment decks as follows)

Play with CtA a few times to get used to it.(the deployment decks) Then add in a few of the expansions.

Process will go ROUGHLY as follows :-

1 - Pick Terrain
2 - Pick the deployment deck / cards.
3 - Place those troops on the battlefield.

4 - Using the specialist cards from CtA OR the cards included in each expansion - make any changes to your deployed troops.

ie Swap 2x Green bowmen for 2x Blue Arbalstiers etc

or 1 Goblin bowman now becomes 2 Goblin Slingers... you get the idea.

There are 10 specialist cards in CtA and at least 2 in each of the other expansions. I'm sure someone will give you the exact numbers You can use / pick 2 specialist cards normally - but houserule this number to one you prefer.
