I noticed something about the ratings for Napoleon's Triumph and Bonaparte at Marengo that seems a little weird.

NT has and overall rank of 196 (as of 2/24/08) and goes all the way up to #3 on the wargame rankings. (w00h00!)

BaM is ranked higher overall at 108, but only makes it to 101 for wargames.

I guess this has a lot to do with how the whole ratings system works, but it still seems a bit odd.

Here's my take (and I'm sure I will be corrected if I get part of this wrong) :

Games get ratings from BGG users. Once a game gets 30 BGG user ratings, it has a bunch of dummy ratings of 5.5 added, and then the average is taken. It is this average, including the dummy ratings, that is used to calculate a game's rank.

For the overall rank, the number of dummy ratings added is 100. For wargame rank, the number of dummy ratings added used to be 30. I believe it was changed to zero recently.

In this particular case, NT has a higher raw average (without the dummy ratings) than BaM, so its wargame rank (based purely on the average of the BGG user ratings) is higher. NT has roughly one-third as many BGG user ratings, so it gets hit a lot harder by the dummy votes than BaM does, making NT's overall rank lower than BaM's.
