How do you choose who goes first? Must they answer an unusual question? Must they sing the lyrics of your favorite high school song? Must they perform a dangerous physical feat?

If you have a favorite, share it. If you don't, have some fun and let your imagination run!

I guess I was hoping people would have some fun coming up with some new, creative questions, tasks, etc, that are game independent and then list them here like:

Last person to jump through a hole in the ice on purpose.

I grab a number of pieces equal to the number of player and place some in right hand, the rest in my left. Then I say "Pick a number between 1 & N." Everyone picks a different number. If someone gets it right they go first, if no one gets it I go first.

A friend uses the following method:
- Assigns everyone a number starting at 0 and counting around the table.
- Asks everyone to show a number of fingers on a count of 3.
- Adds all the fingers up, divides by the number of players and takes the remainder.
- The remainder chooses the start player based on the original count.

I know these are not particularly humorous, but no one gets hypothermia.

2d6 is the most common with my group, but it's boring.

Winner of the last game is first player in the next game works well when you're playing games that are thematically connected - e.g. playing a short game of Race for the Galaxy to determine first player in Twilight Imperium or something.

Another popular one is whoever handles ordering or picking up the pizza gets to be first player for the evening.

I also prefer to let someone experienced be first player if its an unfamiliar game so that people have a chance to see a turn in action before their turn comes up.

Hm... not a bad idea. I think I'll use that

We take one of each player's pieces and place them in cupped hands. Shake thoroughly. Whichever one pops out first is the starting player. Simple and to the point. Takes less time than the more creative methods.

I actually use a d20, highest score wins.

Sometimes I use a joke contest. Whoever makes us laugh the most wins.

That would be me. Formally it is called The Remainder Game.

I like the remainder game as being perfectly random and constant time.

I've never done it but have you ever thought about bidding VP's away. Sorta like RRT does but only once.

With Killer Bunnies, it's always "Who was the last one to...."? As long as the result doesn't favour the speaker, it's a go.

Other games it's either shake-out-the-token, RPS, or loser-of-the-last-game.

ninja Normally, we use a Spin4It (a metal spinner in the shape of a hand with pointer finger extended). Can't seem to locate it on the Boards & Bits website ATM. The most creative method I've heard of (and have since adopted) was suggested by a player as I was running Mammoth Hunters at a con; first player is the one who looks most like a Neanderthal. ninja

On Thursday I just dropped my moby ( thats "cell" to those across the pond ) on the table and gave it a spin. Quick and simple, and everyone has one.

Mt requirements for a start player choosing method are that it must be:

a) Efficient
b) Deterministic
c) Actually random
d) Short constant time
e) Work with any number of players in any situation
f) Work with any game in any situation
g) Be clearly auditable by all concerned

The Remainder Game does that for me.

Quite a few people don't have mobile phones.

What do you do when it ends up pointing between people?

"Tin Soldiers" has the same spinner.

When we misplaced the spinner, we needed new method. Having a cat, there are always little toy mice around. Thus was born "The Mouse Of Destiny". It's quite a bit funnier to refer to "The Mouse Of Destiny" than it was "The Fickle Finger Of Fate"...

We just whip 'em out and see whose is biggest. The ladies object, because they don't have the required equipment and never go first, but they always get a giggle out of a couple of the guys.

Of course I am talking about our wallets. What did you think I was talking about?

Since I play for fun, I like offering the first play to whoever really wants it, the youngest player, or something creative like "Who has most recently been in a castle" (Chateau Roquefort).

If someone objects, the D20 roll works just as well. I usually prefer a certain chair (for comfort) or seating position in the room (prefer to have my back against a wall) more than I prefer my turn order.

1. Each player secretly writes down the last time they made love. The most pathetic and lonely goes first.

2. Each player secretly writes down the next time they *think* they'll be making love. The least optimistic goes first.

3. Longest pinky toe.

4. Each player chugs a 20oz Coke. Loudest/longest belch wins initiative (if remaining players are still conscious.)

5.First to name a song/movie/book correctly, released the year of another player's birth. All players write the years of their birth down in advance.

6. Random Fact Draw. Each player writes some personal (preferably funny) fact about themselves or their history on a slip of paper. Draw randomly.

In my group I usually go first either because A: I know the game and therefore know the mechanics - helps the others to freshen up on the game - although it also tends to make me the prime target of everyones biggest fleet(TI:3) or B: I own the gamedevil
