Anyone thought out any rules for an alternative combat resolution? Interested to hear if there is any out there. The original combat system has had some beatings.

I bring out 7 Ages for solitaire play a couple times a year, and this is the combat system I use, since it would be silly of me to try using the regular combat system which contains an element of bluffing.

1. Calculate force strengths as normal, based on the entire attacking and defending forces. Apply attack and defense modifiers as normal.

2. Draw 1 card for each player and add to that player's combat strength.

3. Loser loses all units. Winner loses all units except for the difference in combat strengths / 2, round up.

It doesn't allow for retreats and advanced tactics, but it resolves in a few seconds and produces somewhat realistic results for a solo game, in which my object is simulation rather than true game balance. I've never tested this combat system in multiplayer.

I'd modify Jerry's a bit:

1 - Loser loses units based on relative combat strength (%s round down, not up here)

Winner = x4 Loser --> d6 + 4 defending units die.
Winner >= x3 < x4 Loser --> d6 + 3 defending units die.
Winner >= x2 < x3 Loser --> d6 + 2 units die, max of 75% of original stack.
Winner >= x1 < x2 Loser --> d6 + 1 defending units die, max of 50% of original stack.
Ties = both sides lose 1/4 of stack and must fight again...no retreat option before 2nd round.

2 - all surviving loser units may retreat
3 - initial 10% chance to retreat before combat starts for boats and planes.
