Is there a setup in the rulebook for the fourth ring with only 6 players?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you just put the fourth ring around the standard 3 ring setup for 6. So the homesystems are in the 3rd ring.

Yes, that is correct.

Is this a hous-rule or actually out of the rule book or a variant? Just curious!

It’s a House Rule or in my case a variant… 6 player game is played on a three-ring system around Mecatol Rex (home systems in the third ring) … a 7 or 8-player game on a four-ring system around Mecatol Rex (home systems in the fourth ring). However my TI3SE group plays with a variant called the "Outer Rim" Ring… a Four Ring for a 6 player game (home systems still in the third ring) and with 7 and 8 Players a fifth ring (home systems still in the fourth ring). Basically we are just adding an outer ring (thus Outer Rim) to our six, seven and eight player games. You will want to keep the player’s home systems always in the suggested ring per the TI3 and SE rules if you use an extra ring. I really enjoy playing with an Outer Rim ring; it seems to give players more options during game play… like attacking from the rear… it's a good house rule, give it a try... if you have the extra hex tiles that is.

Here it is:

LARGER-GALAXY GAMES

With five or six players, players may wish to set up an
additional outer ring. To do this, fewer tiles are
removed during setup.

5 Players: Deal out every tile, so that each player has
11 tiles. Then create the galaxy as normal. (Unlike the
standard 5-player setup described on page 32 of the
original rules, no random system is placed adjacent to
Mecatol Rex.)

6 Players: Remove 1 random hex and then deal out
the rest, so that each player will have 9 tiles.
Then create the galaxy as described on page 8 of the
original rulebook. However, in step 3 of “Creating the
Galaxy,” continue placing systems until there are 4,
rather than just 3, rings around Mecatol Rex.

Playing with the homesystems in the 3rd ring instead is an interesting option.

Keep in mind, there is way too much money in a map that size with 6 players.

I like the high resource games. Makes for larger space militias roaming the board.
