I thought this was pretty interesting. The recent auction of a 1954 letter from Albert Einstein sheds new light on his religious views about a year before his death. Partial quote:

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

Don't shoot the messenger! Also, don't shower him with Quaker Oats tag lines.

Einstein is universally recognized as a profoundly insightful mind. So, when he makes claims about God, his word is used as a justification. After all, if Einstein says there's a God then who am I to argue.

But, you can see how wishy-washy he was about God. In the end, God was some kind of cosmic godly feeling. The way I read it is that he was an atheist who could not bring himself to say the words. I wouldn't blame him as McCarthy and Communism (and atheism) were an important part of his times. I think that perhaps today we would have gotten a more categorical response from Einstein.

The way I read it was that even if there were a divine spirit, Humans don't have the capacity to define it accurately. All religions are a sham.

Does this shed new light on his views? I've read many quotes of him saying these kinds of things. Nothing really new.

If someone could honestly take Einstein's beliefs to be more persuasive than all the logical arguments against religion, that's pretty sad. shake

Actually that picture was taken during a doctors office visit. It was for his medical records to prove he had strep.

Did any of Einstein's writings uncover what, exactly, God needed with a starship?
