Agreed.
It may be old, but it's still damn good.
Buy the 2 expansions now (if you can still find them) and you have a complete gaming experience.
I have probably played 500+ times, but continue to break it out whenever asked.

Hopefully the first of many playings for you.

Up Front is one of those rare gems where after playing you feel like you are in the presence of design genius.

Welcome to the fold.

What they said.

Now let's hope they don't screw up the reprint, huh?

As after-action reports go, this is a bit brief.....
But I enjoyed coaching you through your first session, and very impressed that you managed to break my squad in short order.

Thanks again Peter for coaching me through my first game. I must say, I can't remember having had quite so much fun on the first playing of a new game, even taking into account the fact that I subjected you to an embarrassingly massive crushing defeat.

Marty is going to find out that you can play "Meeting of Patrols" for days on end and each game will be a new story with sometimes astoundingly new results. I don't know what rules you were playing with, but as you add stuff like flanking and wounds the game gets even more engrossing.

I've often thought that if Up Front were to have been published today, the game would probably only be "Meeting of Patrols" with the rest of the game added on as modules at twenty bucks a pop, and gamers would be on the Geek marveling at how rich and variable the basic game is.

I don't think Up Front will ever be republished in any meaningful form. The temptation to screw it up by "streamlining" will be too great, and only the name will remain to mock the remake.

On those rare occasions when I daydream about somehow becoming filthy rich, I make it my hobby to acquire the rights and republish Up Front almost unchanged...I'd include a spare deck and give the personality cards a nice coating, but keep the game the same.

I agree. I have yet to read the rules beyond Scenario B. :D
I believe the rules until Scenario A are good enough already and fun.

Yes, it's just amazing what you get in the basic box - flamethrowers, mortars, OBA, armour, night engagements, DYO, campaign game etc etc. And if you add in the two expansion boxes and the General articles, you've got a complete hobby in its own right......

Actually, it doesn't, but it's a good start. Welcome to the band of brothers.

Just don't get too attached to your squad members if you ever try the campaign.

Man the game can be brutal! But that's what makes it a brilliant in giving you the feel of a WW2 squad leader...
