I have a problem. I recently purchased Heroquest from a thrift store. Surprising enough, it had almost everything excluding two character cards, the instruction manual, and five battle dice.
The manual and cards aren't a huge problem, but the dice are for obvious reasons. Then it hit me: Why not use my heroscape dice?
However, I also wanted Heroquest to be difficult and I remember playing it years back that it was pretty favorable towards the players. What I want to do is use the Heroscape dice with the usual "red skulls for attack" and "blue shields to defend", but applies to both heroes and enemies (meaning they are equal). Would this make the game too difficult?
I even wanted items to "break" if the player roll all blanks on his defense or attack.
You can use the white Heroscape dice without problems. It has three skulls, two shields and a blank. You would use the blank to represent black monster shields.
If you decide to use regular shields for the monsters, just remember that you are doubling the defensive capabilityies of the monsters. That will undoubtedly have an impact on the game especially when the heroes go up against multi-wound monsters with high defense.
If you play a HQ campaign series, I could see "leveling up" the monsters as the characters get more stuff (i.e., harder to kill or even hit). I wouldn't start them off with extra dice sides for attack/defense. The break point in which the characters start rolling over the monsters...even the tougher ones...is pretty obvious.
Having said that, the mission where the rooms are only accessible via teleporters really knocked my heroes down a few pegs!
