In the spirit of goodwill, and I really want this ship to succeed, I will gladly mail you 10 dollars Cdn if it is still functioning in a week. If you take the bet you must mail me 10$ if it is either A: non-communicative or B: Malfunctioning seriously (can't move)

And I hope you win the bet.

I love this stuff. I have NASA TV on right now in another instance of IE. But, this event is sort of anti-climactic. There is really no video to be had, is there? It's just live coverage of the control room as various signals come in. Right?

I heard on the television yesterday that Mars exploration is at a less than 50% success rate worldwide [my emphasis]. I just can't stand politically correct-speak. Here are the numbers I found.

USA: 19 mission attempts - 13 successes - 6 failures
USSR-Russia: 19 mission attempts - 0 successes - 19 failures
ESA: 2 mission attempts - 1 success - 1 failure
Japan: 1 mission attempt - 0 successes - 1 failure

They are talking about that now on the lead-up show. The Russians must have seriously undercut their budgets. The Americans have done far better.

JPL is making quite the show out of it, hamming it up. There is nothing to control. The orbiter and lander are 15 minutes away by command. Everything is automated. You keep hearing one "controller" speaking to another, "can you confirm that...," as if she cannot instantly bring up any status info up on her notebook's monitor. Still interesting, thoug.

Discovery is checking down a laundry list of potential failure issues.
