My son's birthday was this week. He is 12. We got him his first mp3 player.

The first song he asked me to put on it was the Star Wars theme song. The second song he wanted was the Imperial March (Darth Vader's theme).

This morning I noticed that as he was eating breakfast he was listening to the Star Wars theme song while reading Heroscape stat sheets.

What do you think? Is he a geek?

Jess,

I think we must live parallel lives in separate cities. My son turns 12 this week and he totally grooves on drawing creatures of some sort be it transformers, anime-like monsters, Dragonology-type fantasy creatures, etc. At a recent music concert at his sister's middle school he said he didn't like the choir. When I asked why, he said, "they don't sing the stuff I like...like Queen and the Beatles". And when he and I went to see Ironman he was humming along to the AC/DC playing in the Hummer at the beginning and with the Black Sabbath "I am Ironman" at the end.

We just need to face it...we got geeks.

While I consider myself somewhat of a geek. I think it is going to be interesting at what a geek is going to be when the kids grow up. We were raised on Star Wars, Atari, "Computers", Golden age SciFi, Transformers, you name it. In 15-20 years you are going to have grownups that were exposed to Wii, Pokemon, Poky, and whatever the hell these whipper-snappers do for fun today. Will we cease to be considered geeks?

I caught a brief glimpse of him just a bit ago.

Mike, if you read this, I was thinking of the movie Alien being released in 1979.

Actually you had me on the coals on that one, but I won't say how.

No soup for you!

While I was right about Star Wars coming out in 1977, the "Imperial March" song was first introduced in The Empire Strikes Back.

My son turns 11 this week. He has my old MP3 player. He filled it mostly with remixes of video game music, but I think the first song he put on it was Galvanize the Empire, a mashup of Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers and the Imperial March from Empire Strikes Back.

Search for that one. Maybe your son will like it as well.

You must now turn to him and say, "Strike me down, and your journey to the dark side will be complete!"

Then hit him with lightning bolts from your fingers.

*sniff*

You must be so proud.laugh

A couple weeks ago, I was out having breakfast with Dad, and a kid of about 8 or so at the next table was reading all during the meal. I glanced over to see what was so great that he wasn't talking much to his mom, dad or siblings, and it was "Huckleberry Finn"! I leaned over and asked my Dad if "Junior" at the next table reminded him of anyone he knew, and we both busted out laughing. They aren't all digital natives.

I believe Jess is fully capable of this.

I assumed this was a natural ability that all moms possessed. That's why I didn't cause my mom any trouble when I was a kid.

You feared "lightening" from your mum?

My fear had a name, "Shirley". It was a BELT.

It was one of those country and western type belts with my moms name engraved into it, and a permanent crease down the middle. And it wasn't used to keep her pants in place neither, it was used to keep "me" in my place.
