For my birthday party this year, I'm looking to get a large number of plastic army men and vehicles to run a giant WWII-era game in my backyard (there'll be a cookout and some more traditional board gaming as well). I'm really coming up blank on what rules to use though - I've got about an acre of space available for the game, but we'll probably only use 1/2 to 1/3 of that space with the second story porch as a commander's area (complete with binoculars and accouterments). I was thinking of using the Memoir 44 Overlord rules, but I was wondering if there were any better suggestions out there (I also considered Flames of War, but the scale would make the game a bit whacky).

I can't help you since I have no experience with miniatures, but be sure to take pictures.

That does sound very cool. I know nothing about miniature rules, so I have no suggestions, but best of luck to you. And post pictures and an AAR!

I would recommend Operation Overlord: Normandy 1944 and Expansion. It is presently public domain and what is cool that it is a card-driven miniature rule set. You can download them at their official website:

The game will be republished sometime this year so here is your chance to try the game out.

Sounds like a good time.

I found some "rules" for army men figures a while back.

It's really more of a guideline thing though, but it might be what you're looking for.

wow. I'm glad I have 35 years of gaming geek experience.

Otherwise, the caption "World War II Summer Fun" would really give me the creep.
