Taj Session report
3 player game: Fubar, Nuggins and Lil' Lizzy
This was everyone’s first full game, so we started by playing the first four visits to get the hang of the mechanics and some of the strategy. Fubar jumped way out in front by picking up commodities, which worked out well for to illustrate the power of the additive scoring.
When we restarted, things were much closer for the first two visits. By the 4th visit Nuggins had jumped way out in front – nearly doubling the score of her nearest competitor by taking several commodity combinations and by getting the “+2 VP” special card. She kept edging ahead for a while until Fubar and then Lizzy got the +2 card and started getting their act together keeping Nuggins from moving too far ahead.
Lizzy pulled into contention (equaled Nuggins score!) at about the 6th or 7th visit with a killer commodity combo and the Fubar started catching up by multi-scoring with palace connections and a few province wins. By the last two rounds, Nuggins and Fubar were picking up a lot of points with palace connections (especially Fubar). Then Fubar passed Lizzy and then started closing in on Nuggs. In the final turn, the end-game trend continued and immediately before final scoring (counting up the remaining cards in your hand) Fubar and Nuggins were tied at 52! On the 12th visit Nuggins had picked up the Princess – thus giving her the ability to steal the +2 card back from Fubar – which meant a 2 VP swing (Fubar lost an end-of-game point for the white card, and Nuggins gained it). The final score was 57 to 54 to something in the low 40s.
Everyone agreed that it was a great game! Both ladies grew up playing games in their families and like to play, but neither are geeks. Yet this Kniezia title was a hit!
