Players: Andy(grimwold), Al, Brendan(brendannewell); Inky(helixlab); Kevin; Myfanwy; RichardS(spillers); Toby(T-Boy67)
Duration: 2 hours

Eight brave knights of the round table gathered at Camelot.. ready to face the evil forces at work.. both without, and within. King Arthur (myfanwy) lead the group, along with Sir Gaheris (Grim); Sir Geraint (Richard); Sir Bors (Toby); Sir Owain (Kevin); Sir Lamorak (Alan); Sir Caradoc (Inky) and last but by no means least Sir Gareth (Brendan)....

Since we were playing with the Merlin's Company expansion, we decided to play with all the new Knights, except King Arthur who has no replacement.

The loyal knights got off to a bad start, with 2 knights being "charged" as they travelled from Camelot, whilst others were either ambushed by siege engines or lost en route... one piece of good fortune was that Sir Gareth had a vision of the grail on his way to that very quest... a small glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark and foreboding beginning.

It wasn't too long before the quest against the black knight was also lost... leaving us with nothing but 3 black swords on the round table... all the cards had been placed face down, and two were quite nasty... throwing suspicion amongst the group... the treacherous Sir Gaheris pleaded a good case for his duplicitousness in this matter, as the last one to play on that quest... and thus the suspicion was temporarily thrown off him...

Knowing that an early end to the grail quest, while adding 3 white swords to the table, would make it difficult to control the extra siege engines that would inevitably appear... Sir Gaheris raced to complete the grail quest... summoning merlin to clear the desolation that had befallen us, and quickly completing the quest with the help of Sir Gareth and Sir Lamorak... but retaining the grail for himself... mwuuhahhahaha!!!

Meanwhile however, Sir Geraint and Sir Caradoc had managed to hold back the Saxons on the beach... and the seemingly uncontrollable Picts apparently took a break for fighting, leaving the rest of the good knights to concentrate on completing the quest for Excalibur.. which was recovered by the combined efforts of King Arthur, Sir Lamorak, Sir Gareth, the treacherous Sir Owain... and the equally treacherous Sir Gaheris... who was just fractionally too slow and missed out on taking possession of another valuable artefact.

With 3 black swords already on the round table, and the possibility of 3 more white being flipped to black if neither traitor was revealed, Sir Gaheris was keen to get the required 12 swords (no more... no less).. and so he quickly set off to face the Picts, and helped Sir Geraint and Sir Bors to defeat them... this left just 1 sword missing from the table.

If Gaheris had been as cunning as he was treacherous, at this point he should have falsely accused Sir Bors, who for some time now had been looking upon Sir Gaheris with suspicion... due his apparent lack of enthusiasm for the mission (though how you can call completing the Grail quest, recovering Excalibur, and defeating the Picts, showing a lack of enthusiasm, I will never know!!!)... a false accusation at this point would certainly have revealed Gaheris as the traitor, but the Picts would not have been defeated so quickly and the good knights would have had time to uncover both Gaheris, and possibly Owain too...

The accusation soon came, as Sir Bors pointed the finger of suspicion at Sir Gaheris... and after some attempt at protestation, Gaheris fled into the shadows... only to watch as the good knights claimed victory with 7 white swords to 5 black ones (once the two swords for failing to reveal Sir Owain as an equally treacherous knight had been turned over).

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the game, and I was particularly impressed with the new additions from the expansion... playing with two traitors was really good... and the travel cards added some extra danger... the new witch cards were really nasty, adding a lot of tension to the game, while the addition of the merlin figure made it easier to get white cards. All the new knights had interesting abilities, and I'm sure it will be a few plays before I fully appreciate them all.

I was kinda on the fence about this expansion for awhile, but this session report might be the very thing that will knock me over to the must buy side. Great session report, you did a fantastic job capturing what sounds like a fun game night. Thanks so much for sharing.
