Hiya..last 2 questions...

1. If fighting a monster, the fighting is continuous until you kill the monster or your strength goes down to 0, right? and the only way to stop this is to try to sneak away after a round of combat?

2. When trying to close a gate and failing, I presume you take 1D6 damage to your strength? Do you then have the option of stopping this turn or must you continue as in monster battles?

1. Correct. During the investigator phase, the investigator may meet a monster. The investigator may decided to sneak or fight. If it is fight, one round of combat commences. After that the investigator may opt to sneak or continue the fight.

2. If you fail to close the gate, nothing happens immediately. But in Mythos Step 3 - any guardians in the same space would now attack. Then you follow the same procedure as monster fights. Monster attacks first, investigator counter-attacks. Then investigator may attempt to sneak away.

(Of course, a successful sneak invalidates future attempts to destroy the gate without first exploring the other worlds again.)
