Seriously? "Panda Baby-Making"?!? They can't spare even 30 seconds to show events like Judo, Soccer, or Shooting but they can waste 5 minutes talking about how the Chinese get pandas to mate?!

Get a freakin' clue NBC execs! I can understand discussions about the host country, but this is the kind of insipid nonsense that makes me embarrassed to be an American.

It's abysmal. All of that and I only saw two different sports out of the 50 played that day.

PS. I am starting to BT the competitions I want to see, with commercials removed.

This may be slightly off-topic but I've heard that NBC is going to provide 3600 hours of Olympics coverage (just television- that doesn't include internet coverage). I don't see how that can be true. If they had 5 networks broadcasting nothing but the Olympics 24 hours a day (which isn't happening, obviously), that would only add up to something like 2500 hours. What's the deal? Somebody help me understand.

My cable company has three special high def channels that are showing a bunch of extra coverage. One of them was called the "NBC Soccer Channel". We watched back to back to back replays of the weekend games on this past Saturday and Sunday. No in game commercials, no half times, etc. This morning this channel was showing Brazil v China live.

The thing is, I can't find a schedule for these channels and the on TV guide just lists "Olympics". Also, I just stumbled upon the channels by browsing the guide. I don't remember the cable company saying they were adding these channels.

Fixed that for you.

He's extremely impressive, and deserves some serious attention, but it's my understanding that there are actually other athletes competing in various other events. Who knew?

Perhaps double it up due to HD broadcasts? But yeah, that number seems way too high.

My biggest complaint is that on the west coast, (at least in Seattle), they don't start showing the events until primetime. 3 hours AFTER things have happened. So instead, my wife and I watch the Canadian channel we receive to get actual live coverage.

Amen to that! With my generic digital video recorder (DVR) I am recording olympic coverage on NBC, USA, CNBC and some other non-premium channel - much of it in the wee hours of the morning. Using the magic skip buttom I only catch a nanosecond of the commercials and pointless segments. In additional to the usual swimming and gymnastics I have caught all sorts of interesting goodness including fencing, soccer, water polo, weightlifting, boxing, beach volleyball, handball (never saw that played before). During dull portions of the soccer matches I have been using the 4x speed button to move the game along. That DVR is freakin' awesome.

But . . Microrant - Unfortunately the technology does not exist yet to remove the inane commentary that passes for coverage during the sporting events - are the commentators under orders to fill every second of every event with banalities? I supppose there is the mute button.

I watch TV with a (gasp!) antenna, and I was tickled to discover that NBC is showing lots and lots of Olympics on their their 4th HD channel from the NYC station.

Y'all aren't watching the Olympics when they are really on - between 10pm and 5am. The coverage has been great! Lots of varied events (some of them without Americans competing!) on up to three different channels with no piano-laced background fluff pieces. Good stuff.

Almost as good as a Canadian broadcast.

Even more reasons that I should invest in that Tivo thing. I can't stay up all night, but I'd love to have this stuff to watch when I get home.

I always thought summer Olympics are all about gymnastics, swimming, and Track and Field.

You mean there are other events out there? You mean we could watch actual deciding competitions in primetime instead of boring preliminary competition?

Sir, you must be kidding....NBC has provided us with repetitive boring Olympic Games coverage for many, many years. And they have done an outstanding job. So why change the formula?

Seriously, those idiots could squeeze in 30 minutes each night for some cool stuff....

So far on NBC's coverage I've seen:

Shooting
Swimming
Gymnastics
Baseball
Softball
Soccer
Basketball
Badminton
Handball
Water Polo
Weightlifting
Boxing
Fencing
Cycling
Volleyball
Beach Volleyball
Rowing
Tennis

I think it's been pretty comprehensive.

I think he's referring to the prime-time coverage (when most nine-to-fivers get to watch.) So far that has been comprised of Swimming, Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball, Synchronized Diving, and of course the all-important Panda Baby-Making.

All in Primetime when I am awake and able to watch a couple hours of coverage?

Or @ 3:30 am, when you woke up, because the cat starting jumping all over your bed (oh wait, that was me 2 nights ago...)?

I am going to disent a little bit.

I am an Olympics addict. I pretty much let nothing else but the Olympics in my house for two weeks every 4 years.

I hate the fluff...but I think there has been less fluff this year. I think they have been showing a lot more sports this year...even in primetime.

Their cable coverage has been great; including the stuff in the middle of the night that is live.

I still don't like watching "LIVE" stuff three hours later, so I have to stay up past 11:00 PM to watch stuff three hours old.....but I think they have come a long way (I am getting tired of waking up on my couch this week after I fall asleep waiting for some event).
