...and to show new people why they should stick around. I thought I would start a thread with the top 5 reasons why those of us who still love BGG love it.

Here are mine:

1.There is no better resource for board game information/reviews/sessions on the net.
2.There are places for discussions of non-board-game-related topics, which while heated, tend to remain friendly.
3.Tons of great people, intelligent and eloquent to converse with. As per number 2, discussions can get heated, but at the end of the day most everyone shakes hands and goes back to...
4.Board games. We love them, a lot of people out there don't understand our obsession, but here is a place we can come to to obsess over them freely and be completely understood.
5.The people in charge. Sure, there are disagreements over the way things are done, but I've found that when an issue comes up that requires attention, Aldie is extremely quick to jump on top of it and try to take care of it.

Those are my top 5 reasons I'm here every single day. If you have other reasons or your own top 5, feel free to throw them here, as well as any comments. I would like to keep this thread as civil as possible. Please don't let it turn into what all the threads of the past couple of days have been.

*Admission* I am one of the people that got involved in some of the heated talks yesterday, and said some things that may not have been the nicest. It's no excuse, but I had been having a completely horrendous day and that showed in my posts. If anyone was offended by anything I said, I really do apologize. This is part of the reason I started this thread. That, and I would love to get into a discussion that doesn't transform into a flamewar. LOL. Game on, all!

But my hot 5 are:

5. A few liberals with a sense of humor

4. Emoticon Zendo

3. Gamer babes

2. I look skinny next to some of these guys.

1. Porn is blocked at work

5. If you can't have a sense of humor about your views, you doubt them to much.

4. I admit, I have no idea what that is yet, although I have heard it mentioned.

3. I have my own gamer-babe-in-training, but I understand the sentiment.

2. No comment...

1. It is at my work too, but that's easy to get around (well, the "These are the approved websites, all else is blocked" filter is, I haven't gone surfing for porn from my desk).

2. You can answer other people's rules questions!
3. You can read other people's reviews/comments prior to making a purchase!
4. You can provide reviews/comments to help other people!

Ok, every single one of those applies to me as well, especially the last. I think I'm browsing this place at work more than I'm actually accomplishing anything!

and the many people who I respect and admire and enjoy here. (Sincere apologies to those of you I've left off my list!!!)

I have disagreed with some of you, have undoubtedly disappointed some of you, and I neither pretend nor expect that my admiration for you is reciprocated, but it is your intelligence, your sense of humor, and your dedication to this site and what you contribute to it that makes BGG so much more valuable than the database at its core.

I visit this site as frequently as I do, and wish to give back to it, not because of its wondrous database (which I do think is a masterpiece), but because these members' continued contributions interest, challenge, and entertain me unlike any other website.

Information makes websites useful, but the members make it a community.

This is exactly the type of comment I was hoping to see when I created this thread. Thank you, that was well-written and sincere. I reciprocate the respect I hope you will at one point have for me.

too lazy to do a top 5 but i do like to say at least once a year:

This is the most sophisticated database on the web and the creators are genius at giving us what we want. Don't change anything about how you deal with the negativity!

Finally someone that isn't all angsty about all the temper tandrums we've had going on around here.

I love this site and I'm glad it's here. I certainly hope Aldie and the other admins understand that a few upset people aren't the majority. I'm just fine with how things are going. If Aldie pulled the plug I'd be very, very sad.

As I stated in the original post, I did allow myself to get pulled into a couple of those threads, and I'm slightly ashamed of myself. It started out with good intentions, but a bad day affected my judgement and I'm afraid I let myself go. Not as much as some, but worse than I like to see myself. I'm just glad to see how many people love this place and everything it provides us!

I'm still pretty new and learning what the site has to offer.

I like learning about the games I play.
I like learning more about the games I want to play.
I like learning how to kick my hubby's bootie at games he usually wins.
I like the RSP forum and Chit chat, where I can pretend to be smart and witty.
I love the reviews.
I love reading women and gaming and gaming with kids -- people I can relate to.
I like asking questions and getting reliable answers from like minded people who share a hobby with me.
I love the all the game threads and lurk there often.
I like that even though I hesitate to post in the gaming forums more often than not, I don't feel threatened; I'm not afraid to be jeered at or humiliated if I say something wrong (about games) -- well maybe in RSP, but honestly, that's what one expects in that arena, yes?

This is an incredibly balanced site with tons and tons and tons of info. I can't imagine how long it will take me to become very familiar with it, but I honestly look forward to it.
