I'm so happy with the helpful responses people post here.
Here's a question that came up last night:
The rules say that attacking a stronghold is like a regular city, but it also says that the "battle ends immediately if the stronghold's strenth is reduced to zero". Does that mean you can't defeat a stronghold by simply playing 2 more victory than the defender? We played last night that you had to deal 4 x "deal 100 casualties" because winning with 2 victories was too easy. Were we playing wrong? (my guess is yes since we always seem to).

You are right in that it can sometimes be easy to win with 2 Victories, but that is how you play (when assaulting). If going for casualties, sometimes it can take quite a bit more than 4 of them because troops, in addition to the +400 strength, can be in the stronghold. Generally, it takes a pretty good size army to assault a stronghold, because the stronghold can win as well by inflicting full casualties or by 1+ Victories.

What the rules mean when stating that the battle ends immediately if strength is reduced to 0, is that there is no need to move on to the step that determines Victories.

Thanks. What you say makes sense.
But it still seems that unless a stronghold has a noble or troops in it, a large army can come along and win with victories alone which takes some of the thrill out of it. Oh well.

Although it will happen from time to time, you would hope that over the time it would take to build up an army large enough to defeat a stronghold and march over to it, that a player would be able to also build up their defenses enough and/or anticipate it.

EDIT -- By the way, you could always come up with a house rule, such as a Casualties Only, or, at least 3 more Victories to defeat a stronghold, or something else. Whatever the gaming group likes.
