I played Duel in Dark for the first time on August 15 and here’s how it went.

I selected the British and my buddy was the Germans. My bomber fleet was to take off from hex 1 and land in 16. The Mosquito started from hex 8. My target city? Berlin, the heart of Nazi Germany. My flight path basically went from my start position straight through to Denmark, thereby flying over the water and avoiding AA fire for as long as possible. From the coast the bombers would head southwest, and I planned to feint a raid on Kessel before turning east towards Berlin. After dropping my bombs the planes were to make their way more or less northwest, crossing the German coast over Emden and returning to land in hex 16, London.

The German defenses were somewhat concentrated in the South, so I knew from the outset that I would be avoiding most of the AA fire. He deployed his night fighters along the French coast, once again not where I intended to fly.

The beginning stages of the game saw my bombers flying high over the water with the German interceptors headed northeast to catch them. I scored some VP with my Mosquito from pinning one of his fighters in the opening turn and by engaging some of them in the air. The Germans also scored some points from intercepting the bomber fleet. By the time I made landfall the Germans were ahead by 2 VP.
Over Germany is when the game got really interesting. The Germans had landed their fighters to refuel, so I was able to score some more VP with my Mosquito by pinning the interceptors on the ground. I dropped one illumination marker over Lubeck in a seemingly half-hearted feint attempt, before dropping the remaining 5 markers on Kessel. With my bomber fleet located over Lubeck, the Germans bit and concentrated all of their fighters over Kessel. However, the bombers continued on southeast, obviously heading towards Berlin. I dropped my bombs and moved the Mosquito into position to the west of the target city in order to escort the fleet home.

At this point the game was as good as over. I was at 35 VP after the raid, and while the Germans did score some points from intercepting me there was little hope of catching up, since they would have to fly into a headwind in order to catch the bombers. The fleet returned to England and the final score was 28 VP to the British.

Overall a very fun game with some nagging doubts. I wondered if we were scoring things correctly since after I bombed Berlin I was off the scoring track. I also wondered about how it was obvious that I had won the game after I hit the target city. The remainder of the game was anti-climatic as there was no way the Germans could make up the victory points.

Anyway, we only played one night since my buddy was tired. Looking forward to trying this game again.
