"Is this game any good?"

"It has gnomes on a submarine. It has to be good!"

Any more questions?

d10-1 The original theme was Save the Kursk!, which was a little dark for the publisher.
d10-2 FFG is the publisher.
d10-3 FFG likes fantasy.
d10-4 Gnomes are fantasy.
d10-5 Gnomes rock!

THE AVERAGE GAMER (a one-act play).

AVERAGE GAMER: Sir, are there any new games?

GAME PUBLISHER: "Red November" is a tense nailbiter where the players must work to escape from a submarine that is taking on water, threatening their very lives!

AVERAGE GAMER: Sounds boring, pass.

GAME PUBLISHER: Wait! What if they're gnomes?

AVERAGE GAME: GNOMES?!? HOLY SHIT, DUDE I JUST SHOT INTO MY PANTS! GIMME GIMME GIMME!

The End

Soviet Gnomes to boot!

The big question is when will there be a Gnomes in space game?

On his website, Bruno was very clear that they found no taker for a "Kursk" game :too dark, too tasteless, too whatever. Don't even mention the playboy magazine as an item card

Asmodée was apparently willing to give it a go if it was rethemed as a scottish space station (laugh )

But in the end, FF took the submarine idea, insisting on trolls and orcs. Bruno wanted to keep the "soviet" feel, so the compromise is soviet gnomes shake. It's also a reference to the gnomish submarine in Warcraft II.

Yeah, actually, I do. Why? Why gnomes on a submarine? Why do so many games have to be "improved" by appealing to D&D fans? Why is it that the same people who want hobby gaming to have more appeal still insist on everything being done in niche geek themes?

Seriously, what's the problem with a submarine tragedy? Doesn't have to be a particular submarine. What does changing the theme to "gnomes" add to it?

I guess I should be thankful that Fantasy Flight didn't decided that "Cold War" needed to be about the Elves vs. the Orcs.

Actually, Cold War originally was a game about Gnome farming in the Medieval Age. It was rethemed to appeal to the general public, I guess ...

(edit: as far as I know, from Bruno's page) It was never designed as a "tragedy". It has just shifted from a borderline dark humour game to a game with goofy humour. Since it's designed as a light filler it's only fitting, IMO. I for one wouldn't be interested in a game named "Kursk" with items that make fun of the sailors who died down there (porn magazine, bad alcohol, etc.)

YMMV

This, I buy. Gnomes, I don't.

This is not anti-fantasy bigotry speaking, at least not directly. It's that a game so clearly about a Soviet sub disaster should be, um, about a Soviet sub disaster. Take away the Soviet part, fine, it's still about a submarine, or some technological disaster, so, to loosely echo the OP: WTF?

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

But they didn't take away the Soviet theme! Have you seen the image galleries? These are clearly Soviet gnomes.

Or are you suggesting that instead of having steampunk gnomes, they should have kept it with humans but instead, removed the Soviet theme and, say, replaced it with a Chinese sub?

Whatever the personal level of excitement about the original subject matter some of the posters have had, you do not need an MBA to see that it would have been a marketing disaster.

Let me sell you an exciting game about a real life disaster where real people died not that long ago. Hmmm

I'm really not up for deconstructing this in detail; it is a silly topic, after all.

Yes, the only alternative was gnomes.

My original thought when I looked at this was also about the gnomes, but I guess if you're going to have a kraken, which is fantastic, and the crew members are going to be drinking alcohol, gnomes or dwarves kind of work, but gnomes make me think of machines more.

If I recall correctly then it also had vodka (the steriotypical russian drink) so due to its link to a real life tragic event (the Kursk) it did come across as pretty tasteless/offensive even to me (I love the theme of War on Terror for the record).

Gnomes are the machinist/crazy people of fantasy and the soviet references (not Russian, but soviet) are funny due to the absurdist context involved (any sort of enforced fanaticsm lends itself well to satire).

The theme of Red November is very silly and very approciable. I have played it with the kids and they loved it (the theme as well as the game), I did some minor propaganda work and explained Grog to be an energy drink though.
