The single most important fact to know about the China-Tibet issue:

All four of China's major river systems - Yellow, Yangtze, Mekong, and Salween - originate in the Tibetan plateau. Regardless of political or religious ideology, there is no way that China (or any other country) would abdicate control of such a critcal natural resource.
