I recently got interested in this game. Tipically I'm not interested in Euros or resource management games, but I must admit the xbox live of Catan version revived my economics background. I really like the older version cover rather than the new one so I would like to know if there are many differences between both so I take the best decision. Cover doesnt matter too much to me but if it is the only change I would prefer to get the older one. thanks

I'm assuming the Mayfair 3rd and 4th editions that are sold in the US are also the same ones used in Mexico, else, I'm not familiar with any different versions you folks use down south. Going by that....

Also, I have the Mayfair 3rd edition, but have only heard and seen about Mayfair 4th edition through word of mouth and photos online.

3rd edition vs 4th editions:
-[3rd edition] has a shallower box. 4th edition's deeper box lets you extra materials the 4th ed. comes with as well as the 5/6 player extension
-no frame to keep hex tiles from shifting or getting bumped and seperated (although some people have either purchased a frame for it online at a specialty board games store or someplace like Ebay). I'm told people get used to the "bumping". Also told that 4th ed frame doesn't work as well.
-4th ed. has harbor token pieces that can be overlaid on harbor spots
-new artwork in 4th edition, for the cards, tiles, and box

-cheaper because 1) of all the extra stuff + extra materials for the bigger box the 4th edition comes with and 2) general rise in cost of board game now than then
-scarce. 3rd ed. is considered out of print, so if you also wanna do expansions like Seafarers Of Catan and/or Cities & Knights Of Catan, the better to get 4th ed. for compatibility.
