Neat article. It has been brought up a few times before, but I bet a bunch of people still haven't read it yet.

I'm perplexed by the 10.3% of respondents who answered "Very Cool." Wouldn't you gravitate towards one of the extremes in that poll?

I for one, am tired of the extremism on both sides of the debate. The elitist "Cool" nutjobs and the "Very Very" insane wackos on the other side will never understand the clear superiority of being a moderate.

Isn't that simply a justification for sitting on the fence Travis and being unable to make up your mind between Cool and Very Very Cool. I mean, c'mon, Very Cool is clearly just a cop out!

I hadn't seen it before either!

Quote:
Why Germany has colonised this pacific region of the board-game world is unclear. Heinrich Hüntelmann of Ravensburger, a German game producer, thinks that an affinity for rules may be part of “the German soul”. Germans began to acquire the board-game habit with the rise of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century, partly because they were deemed to be good training for young minds. Fritz Gruber, who works for Kosmos, another German outfit, thinks the pastime has proletarian roots; board-games offer cheap entertainment.

Ok, which one of us put this knucklehead up to doing a piece on boardgaming? Fess up! And why one Earth did you let the guy spend a fair chunk of the article talking about euro and trash? Someone get Paul Unger on the phone -- he may have a lead.

Three inches of column space in an respected, upscale magazine and one of them was spent discussing plastic pieces. How pointless was that?

That was a terrible article. There was practically no information for someone outside of the "Eurogame" world, yet it was filled with every current boardgame stereotype there is.

Stereotyped? I like being stereo typed; I actually read the Economist.

(I have been known to mention my only substance abuse problem is the NYT).

I can't help it if all my neighbors are knuckle dragging types who think Jesus is a Republican.

There is no such thing as bad publicity, I agree, we'll take what we can get. Boardgames, like The Economist, are an acquired taste, and both require somebody to actually (The Horror!) sit down and read more than the captions in People magazine.
