The family is really getting into playing games and I would like to find another game to add to our game night that all six of our usual players can play and have the game end in a decent amount of time.

For background we all really like Ticket to Ride, but playing with six people isn't supported and while we could force it I think it probably is just too crowded. We also are fans of Settlers of Catan and to a lesser extent Cities and Knights as well, but we find that with six players sometimes the game just takes too long.

So, I'd like to hear what you might suggest for us! Thanks in advance.

I recommend Bohnanza. It's been a hit with my extended family and plays well with 5-6.

Also might consider BANG!, which also is fun with that amount of people.

First one that comes to mind is a push your luck game, Diamant (also called Unnamed Object). Plays well for 6 and simple rules.

You may want to try some party games for a short but fun time. My initial thoughts are Say Anything and any version of Liars Dice (Pirates Dice, Perudo, etc.). I'll second Bang and Diamant.

Hoity Toity, an older (1990) game, is my new 6-player goto game for lighter gateway/family purposes.

We are always looking for good 6-player games as well. Ones we have tried include:
The Red Dragon Inn, though you have to buy The Red Dragon Inn 2 to make it to 6.
Shadows over Camelot for a coop game.
River Dragons We've been hit and miss with this, half like it, half don't.
Around the World in 80 Days Okay game. About the same weight as Ticket to Ride.
Jamaica is a fun race game.
Saboteur is fun, though we haven't played with 6 much and it may really need more players to really shine.
Citadels will support 6, but I haven't tried it with that many, so not sure how it plays at that number.
BANG!
Hoity Toity was, again, a hit or miss with us.
King Me! worked well with all ages.
For Sale for a light filler.
Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game if your group doesn't mind the theme.
Formula Dé or Formula Dé Mini. Formula De was just re-released. We have the mini version and enjoy it.

Also, check out Shadow Hunters. We haven't tried this one yet, but it is getting good reviews. Again, may be better with more players.

Would second Unnamed Object and Bohnanza as well.

As you can see from the recommendations already given, most of the good six player games are lighter, easier to play games. Ticket to Ride and Catan are pretty light as it is, but there is definitely more to them than a game like Incan Gold (Diamant).

A few six player games that we like (and we like Ticket to Ride and Settlers) are... pretty much in this order...
(1) Bohnanza - Light, but not too light
(2) Medici - Auction game
(3) Shadows over Camelot - Cooperative game with a good number of rules
(4) Saboteur - We think it needs some rule tweaks to keep it even
(5) Diamant (or Incan Gold) - Fast, light, push-your-luck game
(6) For Sale - Light, auction game
(7) Winner's Circle - Pretty light
(8) Ave Caesar - Very light rules and fun racing game
(9) Scotland Yard - Cooperative (all versus one), chase-the-bad-guy game
(10) Ca$h 'n Gun$ - Fun!

Enjoy!

EDIT: Changed "simple" to "light" everywhere I used it. Though the rules are often "simple" in these games, "light" is a better term because sometimes they do require some significant strategy and tactics.

I'll add Ca$h 'n Gun$ (depending on the family, age of kids, etc.), Medici, Formula Motor Racing, I'm the Boss!, Carcassonne with Carcassonne: Expansion 1 – Inns & Cathedrals.

If you want to get into heavier territory Power Grid accomodates 6, but it can be chaotic with that many. Also Arkham Horror is quite an adventure for 6 players, but again, if there's little kids involved it might not be such a great choice.

Nods to Wits & Wagers, Winner's Circle, Bohnanza, Hoity Toity and Citadels.

For 6 players I would certainly recommend the following:

Metro Train themed tile laying game where you have to complete track routes for points. Supports 2-6 players.

Citadels Medieval city building themed card game with some very clever player interaction through the use of character cards. Supports 2-7 players.

Power Grid Power stations, city building, route connections and not forgetting the very clever auction mechanic. Excellent game and a little more complex than my previous two suggestions. Supports 2-6 players.

I hope this is some help and happy gaming!

There are a lot of fun games mentioned above.

I would also recommend:
Kill Doctor Lucky. With six players I would recomend his little dog too expansion. I like Citadels and Condottiere for six.

Happy Gamming

My recommendations:

Cooperative:
Shadows over Camelot

Short/Light/Filler:
Nottingham
Tsuro
Slide 5
Chrononauts

Euro:
Carcassonne: One of the expansions (Carcassonne: Expansion 1 – Inns & Cathedrals) contains pieces for a sixth player.

Dice-based:
Alhambra: The Dice Game

Deduction:
Mystery of the Abbey

A little heavier:
Acquire
Betrayal at House on the Hill

Out of the above, I'd say my highest recommendations for good 6-player family games would be Mystery of the Abbey, Chrononauts, Nottingham, and Alhambra--the Dice Game (though the latter does tend to go a bit long with 6).

In response to some other people's suggestions:
-Personally, I find Last Night on Earth: Growing Hunger isn't great with 6 (or 4, for that matter); YMMV.
-If you're interested by the looks of BANG!, you might want to check out Shadow Hunters, which feels very similar and is just as enjoyable but doesn't have the tendency to drag on that Bang! can have.
-While they're not my top picks, I think that For Sale and Diamant are also good family games for 6.

A couple of my favorite 6-player games are Ca$h 'n Gun$, Citadels, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and Talisman. Also, For Sale is a nice light and quick card game.

I also like StarCraft the board game and Twilight Imperium, but I wouldn't consider them family games.

Thumbs up to Bohnanza, Hoity Toity, and Wits & Wagers.

Very light train game which is not redundant with TTR: TransAmerica

Fun chaos and something completely different: RoboRally

Senji is tremendous fun, and it is about the same weight as Settlers. It is best at 6 players. However it does require players to be fairly crafty and unafraid to make and break alliances.

A party game alternative that is clever and fun is Attribute. This game would be a particularly good outlet for those urges to make fun of one's family members.

I heartily second recommendations for For Sale and especially Bohnanza. Liar's Dice is fun too (I prefer it with 4 or less players).

If I recall correctly, we tweaked it with 6 by adding another saboteur and another regular dwarf to the initial mix of cards selected. That way there is a chance of 1 to 3 saboteurs. That seemed to be perfect with 6.

Note that many of the games mentioned above are much shorter and ligther than Ticket to Ride. Many of them are good though, but if you want something with a similiar weight to TTR, you might not be interested in some of them. Some that definitely are lighter are Diamant, Pick Picnic, Bohnanza, For Sale (really like this one), and probably Transamerica and Cloud 9, although I haven't played these two.

Bootleggers on the other hand is a step up in complexity but very good with 6 players and I strongly recommend it! Roborally is also very good. Buy an extra color to Age of Empires III and you have another very good six players game as well.

Good luck.

Edit: Just remembered that there is a new edition of Formula D coming out soon. Running a league of this in the family should be great fun!
