What's the easiest way to know if I own 1st or 2nd edition of this game? I ask because I just ordered a copy and I'm not sure which it is

The box is smaller

I would also assume the copyright date would have changed to 2008, my 1st ed is marked: 2007 Tropical Games.

Edit: Also from Glen Drover (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/2397801#2397801):

Age of Empires III version 2.0 is now available!

The publisher has just completed the second print run of this game.

Per requests from BGG'ers: Version 2.0 has:

1) an improved scoring track
2) Smaller box size (fits the board)
3) Better card stock
4) A few improvements to the text and layout of the gameboard

If the copyright date is right, looks I got the 2nd edition from GameSurplus. Didn't get an email about it but the box clearly has no dents/dings

Seems like the easiest way is to check the board...it has a much more functional scoring track around its edge. The newer edition's board looks like this:

If you've got this board, you've got the 2nd edition...

The light blues seem more bright/vibrant in the 2nd edition.

Just my opinion.

You are correct. I recently picked up the 2nd Edition and the copyright date is 2008, that is the easiest way. It's on the back of the box at the bottom.
