I remember reading and enjoying the classic work by C.V.Wedgewood (simply called "The thirty years war"). Old but good.

Since then I've read several other works finishing up this year with a biography of Wallenstein, to my mind the most intruiging figure of the period.

But if you're starting then Wedgewood is an excelent overview. For the ECW her book "The king's war" is also good, though on that subject you'll find more competition.
