I'm in a bit of a poll frame of mind.
My company does an annual employee poll to determine how things are going. I thought it would be fun/bizarre/interesting/useful to apply the same questions we get asked to BGG. Some took some serious re-writing, some were not applicable at all (so I removed them) and some seem completely different when thinking about BGG rather than a job....

"Neutral" should be used if you are undecided or feel neutral on the question. If you have no opinion then its best to not answer that question at all.
Poll: The Boardgamegeek annual poll 2008
Do you agree or disagree with each of the following statements?
Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
Aldie, Derk & the Admins on BGG demonstrate consistency between words and actions
I frequently recommend BGG to friends and family
Games let me learn new things and new skills
Aldie & Derk give users a clear picture of the direction in which BGG is headed
I can express my point of view without fear of negative consequences
BGG is more committed to long-term customer satisfaction than short-term results
BGG supports me in developing my games collection
In my experience, most decisions are made quickly at BGG
Gaming gives me a feeling of personal accomplishment
The Admins demonstrate a commitment to customer service
I am proud to be a user of BGG
BGG has the tools necessary to provide excellent customer service
Aldie & Derk show a strong commitment to ethical business decisions and conduct
BGG is making the changes necessary to compete effectively
Creativity and innovation are encouraged
I believe that BGG delivers Personal Recognition to Users
Gaming makes good use of my skills and abilities
I frequently recommend BGG as a great place to spend time
Other users give me timely recognition
I am treated with respect and dignity on BGG
I am motivated to go beyond what is normally expected to help BGG be successful
On BGG, there is very little favoritism
Admins are dedicated to providing quality service to their Customers
I always use BGG instead of the products and services offered by competitors
I believe that BGG delivers World-Class Service to Customers
Aldie, Derk & The Admins create an environment in which everyone is treated fairly regardless of race/nationality, gender (sex), religion or other individual differences
I would stay with BGG if another website appeared with similar functionality and information
Compared to other websites, BGG offers exceptional content and services
I am able to maintain BGG-life balance
BGG has a climate in which diverse perspectives are valued
BGG contributors deliver a level of quality that exceeds Users' expectations
BGG has a sincere interest in its users
Aldie & Derk show by their actions that quality is a top priority on BGG

Considering everything, I am satisfied with BGG as a place to spend time
On BGG, users feel a sense of belonging
BGG has the instructions/guidelines I need to make best use of it
I feel encouraged to come up with new and better ways of doing things
The BGG community values diverse ideas and perspectives
I often think of ways that BGG can be improved
I look forward to coming to logging on to BGG
When I add some excellent content, my accomplishments are recognized
The BGG community is a happy one
When implementing change, The Admins communicate the effect the change will have on BGG
BGG provides adequate processes for handling user complaints and concerns

I was the first to Reply, did I win something?

How does a participant in the survey interpret the "Neutral" category:
- as: I really am neutral on this, not agreeing nor disagreeing
- or as: I need to provide an answer, so I'll pick "Neutral" as I really don't know enough about the subject to be able to provide a decent answer to the question

That's why I most of the times offer:
- 2 negative respones
- 2 positive responses
- a "Not Applicable/Don't know" response
This way the +/- responses are valid as people can not be "neutral".
And you also get a good idea about the number of people that simply do not know enough about a topic to respond positive or negative.

I hope with this response that "I can express my point of view without fear of negative consequences"

Nice idea anyhow.

Good point. I've put a bit of explanation text in. I'd say that if its not applicable or they have no opinion they should not answer the question.

You know, repeating the same question five ways may be great for all kinds of statistical and psychological reasons, but it's a pain in the ass. If you want to trim the poll to a sane length, then I'll give you answers. angry

I guess to there were a few that I agreed or disagreed with BUT felt that BGG didn't NEED to do it.

For instance:
"Aldie & Derk give users a clear picture of the direction in which BGG is headed" - I personally feel they don't 'give' a clear picture. BUT, I don't feel that the NEED to consistently be giving some report or even statement of direction they are taking.

Would you believe that this is a trimmed version of the poll we have at work?
Yep, maybe I should have trimmed it more. You could just skip questions though.

I was going to go down this same path. I got half way down and quit, because it was going way too long. Nice poll, just a few too many questions.

This was a good point and I think the best way to address it is to look at which questions are the most important ones for BGG.
But since several have made the valid point about there being a lot of similar questions I'm going to group the questions into categories then have another poll on which of these are the most important to BGG.

Heres the questions by category:

BGG is more committed to long-term customer satisfaction than short-term results
The Admins demonstrate a commitment to customer service

Aldie, Derk & The Admins create an environment in which everyone is treated fairly regardless of race/nationality, gender (sex), religion or other individual differences

COMMUNICATION
Aldie & Derk give users a clear picture of the direction in which BGG is headed
When implementing change, The Admins communicate the effect the change will have on BGG
BGG provides adequate processes for handling user complaints and concerns

Of course you can be neutral. Most of my answers were 'neutral' because I have no strong feelings on the subject.

I deplore polls that give no neutral/average possibilities.

I agree that a don't know response would have been useful, however.

Having the questions categorized like this makes it a lot easier to see distinctions and duplications. In particular, I can't distinguish between the BGG corporate entity and the Admins--same thing. So here are the ones I found annoying:

CUSTOMER SERVICE
BGG is more committed to long-term customer satisfaction than short-term results
The Admins demonstrate a commitment to customer service
BGG has the tools necessary to provide excellent customer service

Aldie, Derk & the Admins on BGG demonstrate consistency between words and actions
In my experience, most decisions are made quickly at BGG
Aldie & Derk show a strong commitment to ethical business decisions and conduct

This is all FWIW, IMHO, etc. The poll is a really a very good idea, but it just felt way too repetitive. I urge you to tighten it up, and then post it quarterly or even monthly, at least for the customer service and quality aspects.

I'm struggling with this one... Do you mean BGG community and Admins make quick decisions? Or do you mean "I" make quick decisions?

Because the latter is certainly NOT the case, I vacillate and agonise constantly about what game should next go on my wishlist.

And no, I don't work for IBM or Caterpiller. I think there are a lot of large companies that now run employee surveys, and probably pay a lot for them.
BGG is getting this for free, thanks to their in-build poll technology. Bargain.

A few people have stated that there are too many questions, or pointed out that some are effectively duplicates of other questions.
What would best when this poll is run again?

Poll
How many questions should there be? (Can select multiple options)
The current 45 questions are fine
I'd prefer Tall Walt's version (36 questions)
Reduce to 30 Questions only
Reduce to 20 Questions only
Reduce to 10 Questions only
Remove the duplication, but then add other different questions
Lets not see this again

I'm sure it comes from a place of love for BGG however, and no, I'm not being sarcastic.

For those who said they thought the questions with Gaming Focus were the most important ones (which so far is nearly everybody) you may want to check out this series of polls started by LankyEngineer:

The only question I don't much care for is:

Quote:
I can express my point of view without fear of negative consequences

The question seems to reflect more on the user than BGG. It seems to be asking "do I have the ability to express my point of view in a tasteful manner" rather than anything about BGG or the performance of BGG staff. If you're fearing negative consequences, you're probably phrasing your point of view in a manner that is causing you to have to fear.

However, I think that some of the other questions get to the intended point, so I guess it doesn't really matter all that much.
