Check out the ad site for the new Risk:

It asks ARE YOU MAN ENOUGH?
And then says, “Grab your shoes and pull up your panties. Your manliness is about to be tested.”
And there’s the words MAN UP! on the screen.
And a MANLY METER. (Subtle.)
And a STUD CHALLENGE, where you pick up women in a bar using pickup lines (I scored two women at once, but left a $20 bill for the other one as “seed”—apparently I need pickup lines to hire prostitutes).
And a WIFE BUTTON, which leads to a Tiffany’s parody page.
And a remote control which plays a movie of hot women dancing.
And a finger you can pull for the obvious effect.
And the ability to turn your truck’s trailer hitch into a sack of two soccer balls. (Way subtle.)
And a big pile of poo on the intro page, which leads to a game where you increase your manliness by flinging poo.
And of course, no ability to pick a female avatar. But you can pick your mustache, so that's something.
I erected my MANLY METER up to 2849 manly points (I have chest hair!) before I got bored. Took about eight minutes.

I’m sure proud to say I designed a Risk game now.

So did my co-designer Teeuwynn (who is a—shock and horror—girl who likes games). Then she looked. Guess she won't be buying her kids Risk for Christmas.

But of course, I doubt my old employer depends much on moms buying kids board games. :^)

Huh. Guess I won't be buying Risk. I'm just a frail little flower of femininity - I can't possibly understand war.

I will, on the other hand, be writing our fine friends at Hasbro a letter.

This is no doubt a very stupid marketing strategy, but I wouldn't boycott their products over something so silly. Marketing and advertising types often have no clue how bad their ideas really are. (For example, the recent Hillshire Farms commercials, which are so incredibly stupid that I actually feel silly buying their lunch meat).

Gosh. I didn't feel like inventing a manly nickname, so I chose "Pick a name for me".

Long story short, now I'm "I.P.Freely 627". Apparently whoever is in charge os Risk marketing is not only a chauvinistic bore, but an 11-year-old chauvinistic bore.

Oh, and a piece of advice before you enter the "Stud Challenge". If your three pick up lines are "Hi", "Wanna shag?" and "Trust me, I'm a Geek", a couple of transvestites will throw water at you and you'll end up wit -200 points.

Which proves that, as a simulation, it's awesome.

I saw that stupid ad too(which makes no seance, I thought risk a WAR game, not a MANLY game!), and I want to write Hasbro an angry letter, any idea how to do that? I've searched there website for a complainants department but couldn't find any thing. any help is appreciated.

Just to be clear, I have no problem with an ad campaign targeted at men if it's cool. Check out this amazingly sweet promotion for the Dodge Ram: www.ramchallenge.com/

The problem with the Hasbro promo is not that it's exclusively focused on male customers, it's that it's just stupid.

WEll, they kind of lost me with the entire Red Ocean and arrows pointing everywhere. The added rumors of the killing of the traditional way to play in favor of the NEW and IMPROVED for ELITE BGG gamers...wasn't all of a win either...

But I still supported them as I went out and got the Book case version instead.

I suppose I just am not Manly enough to play with Red oceans and little arrows.

of course, Manly Men REALLY play Black Ops instead...even if it's the same game with different parts...theme is everything!

(Well, for an AT gamer, theme is a lot at least).

From the History section ...
Hasbro wrote:
RISK was absolutely unique because it introduced groundbreaking game concepts. It was the first board game to offer non-linear movement - that was crazy thinking back then.

Really? I hadn't realized that Tactics and Tactics II were strictly linear movement games. You learn something new every day!

That is really bad. It's kind of offensive, juvenile and really quite stupid. It doesn't make me want to run out and buy the game, even though I just bought it last night.
