Fooling around with a pirate idea

need figures

4-8 poses (prefered) ... or all one pose but 4-8 colors

1" to 2" in height... fit in a .75-1.5" base square

really have to be able to reliably free-stand

bulk and cheap

Various plastic 20mm (1/72 scale) historical miniatures manufacturers have, or had, pirate themed sets. Usually something like 40 figures in 8 or 10 poses (sometimes up to 20) for around 10 dollars U.S.

You can check out sites like Michigan Toy Soldier, as an example, to see their products.

By definition, most of these figures are approx. 1" tall. You can base them easily on pennies. They'd fit the lower end of your size scale.

You usually have to look them up by the manufacturer, but here are some examples.

Orion Set: 40 English Pirates in 20 poses (with a cannon and a decayed corpose) - 13 bucks
http://www.michtoy.com/MTSCnewSite/newplastic_folder/orion_1...

LW Set: 39 Buccaneer figures in 12 poses - 12 bucks
http://www.michtoy.com/MTSCnewSite/newplastic_folder/lw_russ...

There might be other sets if you look.

Your local toy store should carry plastic soldiers, cowboys/indians, knights, and/or pirates in a 'cheap bag' form factor ;-)

What about stand-up cardboard figures?

Look in the grocery store or a Novelty Wholesaler (Those are usually a $50 minimum order); Pirates are the closest thing to the cheap toy soldiers of my youth, the wholesalers have "assortment" bags. These will be more the 1.75-2 inch figures I think you are looking for.

here's some ninjas on ebay:

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=4&cam...

$15 with shipping.
I have bought small plastic ruuber-type ninjas in the past off ebay as toys for my son but I could not find any up right now. They are the small plastic ones you can get from Chucky Cheese.

After searching further I did find some of the ninjas I bought for my son. Its here:

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=4&cam...

He loves those damn things. He will get more every time he is at Chucky Cheese even though we have like a hundred of them at the house.
But I digress.....

also on the pirate note Cardhaus.com has Sword & Skull on clearance for $8.95 not including shipping. There are 2 poses in 5 different colors equalling ten figures. Check the pictures out here at BGG.
