What part of Japan is he in? That will make a big difference on shipping. If he is on the main island than it will be less than if he is on say Okinawa. Also if he is in the military or is a civilian contractor, you should be able to mail the games to an FPO address. Postage is the same as shipping to San Francisco. Most online retailers will ship to an FPO address.

If he is none of the above but he is on the main island, you can try talking with the english speaking boardgame group that I know of over there. http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/JIGG/
. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Alternatively, you can try checking out these geeklists which all talk about boardgame shops in Japan.

Hopefully this will help you out a bit. I spent 3 years in Japan and it's a great place but the language barrier is a PITA.

Regards
Ben

Although I like going to the game stores (in Japan or otherwise), I prefer just ordering from overseas. The way I approach it is by first not restricting myself to Amazon.com (some online stores will ship at a better rate... plus I hate Amazon.com on principle). And second, order a huge shipment to get a discount.

If a store in Japan doesn't already have the game on the shelf, chances are they are going to have to order it JUST FOR YOU anyway and then charge more for the inconvenience of storing it, etc. while your friendly UPS shipping service will do that for free (and deliver to your door). Also, they might charge for the inclusion of Japanese translation manuals/DVD's which I assume you do not need.

I don't think you're going to get around the high shipping charges. You're either going to have to pay it by shipping from America, or you're going to pay it from the higher prices from the retailer here.

Is your brother in Tokyo? There are a few stores I know online, but they only have a Japanese language site.

You're probably better off either sending something else or buying a bunch of games so that the shipping charge per game is cheaper.

Sometimes living here can be a pain! shake

wow thanks for all the help so far. he lives in nagoya.

i checked out the websites but they didn't translate too well and i couldn't really tell which versions of the game i would be getting.

i think i may just get a big shipment from the whole family to send over..which should be much cheaper.

Scott,
Shipping to japan is not that expensive actually. You're best off ordering the game yourself, and shipping it first class to Japan.
