Yahtzee is one of those games almost everyone has played, generally to the point of familiarity breeding contempt. It is simple to play, can be almost anywhere, and has a million variants that can spice it up a bit. It requires only 5 dice and a scorepad.

The basic premise is that you roll the 5 dice. You may keep as many or as few as you want and reroll the rest. After the reroll, you can again keep as many as you want and reroll. At tis stage you have your final result which you can then score in a variety of places on the scorepad. Examples of scoring rolls are three of a kind, full house and straight. The ultimate is 5 of a kind (i.e. all dice show the same number), called a "Yahtzee". This is reasonably rare to get, so if you do get one be sure to yell out "YAHTZEE!!!!" good and loud (unless you're playing in the library or at a wedding).

A good game for beginners, it is simple, quick to play and relys on luck and skill. It can be played with multiple people taking turns and comparing scores at the end of the game, or solo against your previous best.

There are plenty of free software versions online, and you should be able to pick up a real life copy cheap at jumble sales.
