Would a German friend here like to explain what the Church Tax is and how it works?

German church tax is calculated as a percantage from yor income tax. But as I am not a member of any church, I never had anything to do with it outside of accounting-classes.
I found an article on english wikipedia, which should answer your question:

I knew of a Dutch fellow who migrated to Germany for work. He was baptized at birth but never went to church. Suddenly he got a demand to pay his Kirchensteuer (doesn't exist in the Netherlands), which made him leave his church officially asap, being (afaik) a happy -and less paying- atheist.

So then do they take that tax out of the taxes you already pay, or is the tax in addition to any other tax one might pay?

It's in addition, at least in Austria (should be the same in Germany, really). The income tax is just a handy base to calculate the church tax.

But, oh, a part of the church tax actually reduces your taxable income, you depending on how much you earn, you'll get a part of it back via taxes.
