Hell's Belles left England on two runs this week.

The first was to St. Omer, it's target the Airfields there. Capt. Shannon had good cover there and back for this candy run. Two waves came at her over the target and both were scared away by our cover. The weather over St. Omer was good but our Green Bombardier Lt. Carlson was a little jittery on his first mission as 5% of our bombs fell in the target area. As we turned towards home 2 more waves of German Fighters came at us. Our fighter cover and other B-17s kept all but one ME-109 from us. Mst. Sgt. Holmes turned the top turrent and blasted that bastard out of the sky before he could get a shot off. It was smooth sailing back to base. The celebration was not long as we got another mission right away.

This time is was to bomb the rail yard at Amiens. Once again our fighter cover was good, but alas not as good as one would hope. Three waves of Germans fell upon us and each time those Brits chased them away. Until that German fighter came at us at 3 o'clock. Overall and Holmes gave short bursts at the 110 as it came in but to no avail. It opened up with his machine guns and stitched a line from the Starboard wing to the Radio Room. Sgt. Ryder, the Radio Op, was seriously wounded and the 110 was chased off by our fighter cover as it came back around. This time around Carlson was better on the trigger as we were on target at the Rail Yard and 20% of our bombs hit true. On the return we saw naught a flash or speck that might be an enemy plane and clear blue skies awaited us at the landing field. The medics carried Ryder away and we headed into the hanger for a pint.

Good news later that day as Ryder will recover!!!! His flying days are over but he will make a full recovery and is moving the a training facility back home. Here comes an aid with another notice of briefing, must go along now, Hell's Belles awaits...
