Re:Setup for a 5/6 player game.
Jeff Paull (#86164),
What do you mean by, "it assumes you've played the game before." I have played it before. There are no rules for a random setup. The game rules in the base game only say the following:
"Each player places his two colonies and 1 spaceport on the circles (colony intersections) between the planets that are Catanian colonies as shown on the starting set up diagram to the right."
Then there's a picture on the right showing where everything goes. So green always starts with the same three starting colonies, yellow always starts the same, as do red and blue. This ensures proper balance in resource production at the start of the game.
The problem is, the expansion rules do not include their own setup diagram, and neither the base game rules nor the expansion rules say how to do a "random setup". Not to mention randomness can throw off the game balance. The base game seems to be designed to give a fairly well balanced starting position for all players, however the expansion does NOT say how to achieve this same balance with the altered starting conditions. This is INDEED an oversight if I've ever seen one.
