So the last couple of nights before bed, we've been goofing around with paper & scissors, making snowflakes & stuff:

Here's one I did tonight, which turned out better than I expected:

(If that seems morbid, I was just following my kids' lead: to the left of the snowflake you can see some red thing which I assume is a bloody, glittery spinal column.)

I am curious to see how this development will influence the snowflakes my kids make at school.

I don't want to say it can't be done, but the difficulty in making a pirate snowflake is that pirates are notoriously asymmetrical.

I guess my question is: Why do all those skulls wear Pickelhaubes? Is it the case that only Prussian infantrymen are viable corpse substitutes for normal precipitation during the Winter months? I am so curious now.

Pickelhaubes. That word has never come up on my Merriam Webster "Word of the Day" calendar. Thanks, as always, Herr Cranky.

Not to be critical (in fact, I say this BECAUSE your snowflakes are so nice and I think they could be nicer), but snowflakes are more accurately represented in 2 dimensions with 6 fold symmetry. Here's a link for how to do the initial fold:

Pickelhaubes!? (Or, if Wikipedia can be believed: "Pickelhauben!?") Those are spikes through the skulls!

Ha ha ha, thanks. That half-snowflake in the first picture was a 6-pointer, but I screwed up somehow and wound up with, uhh, halves, and never went back to figure out what I'd done wrong. I agree, six points look better.

Oh wow, that had to hurt. Those poor Prussians! Somebody probably spiked them for using "n"s to make plurals.
