Hi.

I had a chance to play this for the first time recently. My group is a group of very inexperienced boardgamers, and there are many conventions that we are not familiar with. My group is hoping to get better and we have high hopes for this game to become a staple for the immediate future, at least.

My question is about how combat rolling actually takes place. We were rolling 1 die for each attacking unit during the appropriate attacking stage. And then, as long as the defender had an appropriate defender, they would roll to defend.

Example:
An attacking army has 1, daimyo, 2 bowmen, 1 swordsman, 2 gunners, and a spearman.

A defender has provincial army of 3 spearmen, and 1 bowman.

Attacker rolls 1 die for one bowman. Defender rolls for his sole bowman. Both miss.
Attacker rolls 1 die for second bowman. Defender rolls since his bowman is still alive. Both miss.
Attacker rolls 1 die for 1 gunner. Defender rolls for bowman. Attacker hits. Defender removes one spearman.
Attacker rolls 1 die for second gunner. Defender rolls for bowman. Both hit. Attacker removes his spearman. Defender removes his bowman.

Attacker rolls 1 die for daimyo. Defender rolls 1 die for 1 spearman. etc..

Is it best to do it this way, or to roll all of your bowman at once? It seems that as long as a defender has 1 defender of a type (ranged, melee) they can roll a defense. If they have no melee units and the attacker has melee units, the defender gets no roll - is this correct?

Apologies if this is a common wargame practice, but we are all newbs. One of our group has had this game for 15 years, and this is the first time they were able to get it to the table.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Combat rolling
It's been a while since I've played, but IIRC, there are two phases, Ranged and Melee. All Ranged units roll at the same time (archers, riflemen). Hits are assigned accordingly. Then out of the remaining units Melee units roll, and hits are assigned. Repeat until one side is out of units.

The way you described your combat is incorrect. Both the attacker's and defender's bowmen and riflemen fire at once, and then don't attack until the next round of combat. The units are not "pairing off" to fight, they attack as a group.

Re: Combat rolling

The game comes with several (10?) dice, use them.

Roll all like units together.

Start with range fire.
Attacker rolls for all bowmen, then for all gunners.
Tally all hits.

Defender rolls for bowmen, then gunners.
Tally all hits.
Then casualties are taken on both sides.

Move on to melee
Attacker rolls for his Daimyo, then for swordsmen (and ronins as they hit on 5s as well), then finally spearmen. Keep track of hits from each group and come up with the total for melee.

Defender does the same as above.
Then both sides remove casualties from melee.

This completes one round of battle.

Re: Combat rolling
Something I've found helpful is using different colors of dice to represent all of my units. (Black represents spearmen, and white represents swordsmen.) Of course the one rolling the dice has to declare what type of combat unit is which BEFORE rolling, due to the varying effectiveness of each unit. This way battles are resolved much faster, and the game takes less time. The only drawback is that you will have to purchase the dice, unless of course you already have another game with dice you can use.

So if you choose to take take spearmen as casualities from bowmen or gunners attack roll do they still get a defensive roll? If so that doesn't make sense because one would still get to roll their defensive rolls for their ranged attacks and then also from ground attacks? From a monetary standpoint it would be best then to just use spearmem, and load your armies with them and not use any gunners or bowmen because spearmen are so cheap.

Or is the rule if they take spearmen as casualities they don't get to roll a defensive roll, and are lost and removed for the melee part of combat.

Any melee units taken as casualties during range fire will not participate in the following melee round, they're dead. So no, your spearman doesn't get defensive fire if taken as a casualty of range fire.
