Can a defender enter the battle board from any side that has 3 hexes? Do you have a choice as to whether you enter the board vertically or horizontally?

No, the "friendly edges" are determined by the direction that the attacker enters on the main board. The defender enters from the direction opposite that of the attacker.

To further clarify, the number on the main board corresponds to the name (upper right corner) on the battle board.

Both answers above are good, but if you're new to the game, it may still be confusing. So allow me to try a bit of text art.

..A..
./.\.
B...C

Pretend that "A" is the side of the map that has the battleland name printed above it. When a combat occurs, you (mentally, at least) rotate the battle board so that the "A" row of 3 hexes is in the same position as the number printed within the territory on the masterboard. Then you look for the side that the attacker physically entered from on the masterboard. So if we were fighting in Desert 107, then the board would be set up the same as my pathetic attempt at text art, and the attacker would enter on the four hexes on the side made up of the line from A to C (there's only one legal entry to the territory under normal movement).

Contrast that to the marsh hex "under" tower 200 that's numbered "108". You'd flip the battleboard over to get

C...B
.\./.
..A..

If the attacker entered from the outer rim, then they'd again come in from the line from A to B. But if they came in through the tower, they walk an from the B-C side.

The defender always comes on the side opposite the attacker (marked B in the first example I gave, C in the second, A in the third).

When a player gains Titan teleport and uses that to teleport into combat, then they get to choose which side they attack from, thus fixing the defender's side.

Hope that helps.

This is the case for every battle board except the Tower, the defender always enters within the tower walls, and the attacker enters from the same side regardless of which direction they entered the tower on the mainboard.

... but the turn 4 recruitment enters from not from the tower, but have to walk from the 3-hex side opposite the attackers' entry point.
