I think it does play a lot easier than it reads...not to hard to pick up. in the end it does all flow togther nicely.

Honestly the trick to really getting MonPoc is playing it. The basic rules tend to come in a game or two but to really get a feel for your units and a lot of the sneakier strategies you have to really get several good games down. I also suggest concentrating on one faction to learn before moving on to another, all the monsters play very differently and it can get confusing if you are trying to master several at once.

Hey Chris, pop on up to Dream Wizards in Rockville on Saturday, they're running two Monsterpocalypse tourneys (11:30 and 4:00). Even if you don't play in the tourney, you can get a few good tutorial observations in, and probably a game or two on the side.
