(I originally posted this in the ASLSK area, but I am actually using ASL rules, not SK, so it is suggested I post here.)

Hi all -

I'm testing out a new introduction to ASL. It uses PowerPoint slides with an audio track.

There are currently 5 sessions, ranging from 15 minutes to a half hour each. Lots of actual examples!

ASL 101 Session 1: The Sequence of Play

ASL 101 Session 2: Personnel Units

ASL 101 Session 3: Movement

ASL 101 Session 4: LOS

ASL 101 Session 5: Fire Combat - Part 1

The links to all of these are available www.russgifford.net/asl_training.htm

These do require FLASH to play - and with a FAST connection, it could take almost a minute to load up before it starts to play.

Let me know what you think. If there is enough interest, I'll do the next five sessions!

I watched the first video and part of the second. They are very well done!

I'm sure videos like this will help new people enjoy the hobby.

Thanks for making these.

Russ, I've read your first ASLSK tutorials and they're all excellent. MMP should hire you in some fashion, you explain the rules so well.

oops, after seeing the demo, I realized that I had purchased your excellent tutorials on the GBACW series, which also were fantastic.

I really enjoyed these sessions.

However, the abrupt audio cut out after each outline segment needs to be
addressed. It is cutting off the last thing you say.

I would like more even if the audio glitch cannot be dealt with.

Thanks for the feedback. My server is starting to glow with the downloads, so I am guessing they are popular.

I will try to start turning these out again. Obviously, they are a tremendous amount of work, which is why I quit when I heard nothing from MMP. (I had hoped MMP would want these, but there doesn't seem to be any interest as far as I can tell.)

On the other hand, they also haven't said I can't do them, so we'll go ahead like we had good sense.

I will try to have session 6 done by 2/1. (I have a database project I am finishing at the moment, so that might be tough. I did these five in 50 to 80 hours, so each one is less than 10 hours hard labor....)

I will also try to watch myself so I stop cutting off the last few words - it is entirely my fault that this happens. When I do personal presentations, I PURPOSELY WANT my narrative to continue while the slides change. But while the PowerPoint narrative is a VERY cool feature, it embeds the audio into the slide. Change slides - audio track cuts off. I just need to pace it better.

My problem? SHUTTING UP when I change slides reminds me FAR TOO MUCH of the old gradeschool filmstrip shows where the record 'BEEPED' when it was time to change to the next slide. (If you are under 50, that will make no sense to you at all.)

Anyway:

Proposed followup:

Session 6: Combat Fire, Part 2 ( Fire Lanes, Assault Fire, Spray Fire, Bazookas)
Session 7: Routing Basics
Session 8: Advances / Close Combat
Session 9: Concealment / End of Turn actions

ASL 101 - Final Exam:
Session 10: Putting it all together - a practice turn

ASL 102

? - Fire Lanes
? - ELR / Heat of Battle
? - Wall Advantage
? - Smoke

ASL 202

? - OBA
? - Guns
? - AFVs

ASL 201 - Strategies, Tactics and Implementations

Sessions: To Be Determined

Which is why I was hoping MMP would be interested. There is a lot of work involved, and I just could not see where this project would end!

Ah well. Everyone needs a hobby, right?

---Russ

I know this sort of thing is a ton of work. Thank you for doing them. I wish there was this sort thing with other games as well.

I don't remeber seeing it, but do you have "donate to the cause" button where people could throw you a couple bones for your hard work?

I just found these and the ASL 201 files at russgifford.net. Fantastic! Thanks very much. I've been learning ASL on again/off again for a long time now. Video assistance is much appreciated.

I'm under 40 (just barely) and remember this very well. I suppose that says something about budgeting in my school district back in the 70s & 80s...
