Are you a budding Graphic Artist? Do you enjoy Boardgames? Would you like to produce the artwork for a boardgame?

JKLM Games Ltd is currently looking for Graphic Artists to work on the games which we will be producing over the next year and beyond. Experience of producing artwork for boardgames is not required, but experience of producing artwork using Photoshop, InDesign or similar is required.

The work includes producing the artwork for the box, laying out the rulebook, and depending on the game, producing the artwork for the game board, cards, player aids, etc.

JKLM Games Ltd is based in the UK. We are happy to consider Graphic Artists from around the world, but require that you are able to discuss the work in English.

If you are interested, then please send an e-mail to els (at) jklmgames.com, providing a link to an electronic portfolio of your artwork.

David.

Hi David,

I've just sent you an e-mail with my website, but I'll post it here as well - just in case: www.marufow-art.de

Cheers,

Dimitri.

Having played one too many really bad designs by "budding" graphic artists, I'd recommend asking for someone with a background in industrial design, or who at least has an eye for usability and ergonomics too. Otherwise you could easily end up with a very nice looking billboard or magazine layout, but not a very functional game playing board.

Good point...there are very few people that can pull off doing the art AND design of a game. What you really should be looking for is an illustrator and a graphic designer. We design-exclusive types know usability...though not all of us can draw very well.

More detailed info about your current project(s) would be helpful. You don't have to be very specific, but here are some things you should include:

What genre is the setting - fantasy, sci-fi, modern, ancient, medieval, etc.?
What style(s) are you looking for - photorealistic, photographic, cartoon/caricature, animated, eastern, etc.?
What types of items need to be created - board, a few cards (4-10), a deck of cards (~52), a LOT of cards (100+), multiple boards, etc.
Are the instructions ready for layout/illustration - have they been proof read by numerous people, checked by a technical writer, etc.?

All of these answers can help the artist/designer to determine whether they are a good fit for your project. If you're looking for someone to do a deck of 200+ fantasy cards that are photorealistic and text-heavy, someone who has a few hours a week with a Manga style and horrible grammar skills probably won't be a good fit.
Even if you don't have all the answers, whatever you DO know will help.

I agree that for a specific project, we need information like that. But we're not looking for a specific project. We produce several games a year, with different themes, volumes of work, timescales, etc, and have a general lack of graphic designers for the number of games we produce. So we're working the other way around. If people are interested, then get in touch, tell us (and show us) what you can do, and we'll fit the games to the people.

David.

The games we produce have usually been through months, or even years of prototyping and playtesting, so this side of things has in many ways already been resolved before the final artwork is started.
