The special Destiny Cards say "Have an encounter with the player who has [most or least of something] (other than you)." Then, on p. 12 in the Driving Out Foreign Colonies paragraph it says "If a player draws [...] a special card that designates him/her as the defense the player may try to eliminate a foreign colony in his/her home system." So which is it?

Maybe it's like this:

- if I draw a special targeting myself and have no home systems to retake I have to attack the player who has most/least of something other than me (that's obvious from reading the card);

- if I draw a special targeting myself and have a system to retake I have the choice of either retaking it or attacking the player who has most/least of something other than me.

Any help from the experienced players? Sorry if it's blatantly obvious, English is not my first language.

All of the special destiny cards stipulate "other than you" as well as "the encounter takes place in the other player's system", so you can't have an encounter in your own system with one of these cards.

Thanks. That sentence from the manual is really confusing.

In older versions, there were some Special Destinies that could conceivably point back to the Offense. I suspect, like those 'alert' things on some of the Destiny cards, the clause in the manual is preparing for future expansions with additional Special Destiny cards.

It also provides guidance for home-made material, which has long been a part of CE.
